Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. January 28, 2022 at Church in the Valley in Milton; funeral services at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 29, 2022 at Church in the Valley, Rev. Kevin Shull and Rev. Greg Lunsford presiding. Burial will be in White Chapel Memorial Gardens. The funeral service will be broadcast live on Church in the Valley’s Facebook page. She was born January 25, 1936, to Jesse Lee and Essie McClure Nicholas and was preceded in death by her husband, John Heck. She is survived by her daughters Joan Spilman (Richard) of Hurricane, and Jill Spencer (Dennis) of Lexington Park, MD; sister Jane Nicholas of Milton; grandchildren Catherine Bartley and Margaret Spilman (Eric Barker); nephew James Allen Nicholas; and great grandsons John and James Bartley. Janet was educated in Milton public schools and went on to study at Marshall, where she received a Master’s in Musical Performance. She was a brilliant pianist and beloved choir director for many years. She started at the age of 15, playing for services at Milton Baptist Church, where she served as pianist/organist and choir director for 27 years. Toward the end of her tenure there she directed the Bicentennial Choir, a community chorus put together to celebrate our two-hundredth year as a country. She then moved on to Milton Presbyterian Church and, finally, spent 25 years as pianist and choir director at St. Timothy’s-in-the-Valley Episcopal Church in Hurricane. Her teaching career started at Ona Elementary. After a hiatus, she returned to teach choir at Milton Junior High (where she led the Glee Club), Milton High School and Cabell-Midland High School. Her show choir, The Vocal Dimensions, was legendary, touring throughout the region and competing at Disney World. Wallace Funeral Home is assisting the family. Janet was a very dear, longtime friend. We taught together for years at Milton Jr. High. She was family to me. My deepest sympathies to her family. She was such a special, sweet, and talented lady---a true friend. I will always miss her. Heaven is receiving a special "angel". God bless her soul.

Ms. Janet was a very sweet woman and a wonderful neighbor. She was one of the first people to welcome us to the area when we moved to WV. She was loved by all of us. She will be greatly missed.

We are neighbors of Ms Heck and we absolutely loved her.. she was always so kind and friendly to everyone. We walked our puppies by her house everyday and she always gave them a treat. At times she would even leave them something on her mailbox in case she missed us. We gave her a blanket for Christmas this year and she left us the most heart felt thank you card .. We are so saddened by her passing. Prayers going up for all the lives she touched. Good Bless.

Janet and my Mom taught side by side at Milton Jr High for what seemed like forever! I loved going to school with mom so I could visit Janet! They remained good friends all these years even after their teaching careers long ended. I pray Janet will rest in peace as she will truly be missed by so many, but especially my Mom!

We were so sorry to hear of your loss of Janet. She was a wonderful teacher and great support for our daughter, Carrie, when we moved from Texas to Milton in 1991. Carrie was adopted into Janet’s show choir right away, found wonderful Christian friends, and loved Janet dearly. We were so grateful for such a friend for Carrie, who taught her well and really made her come out of her shell and shine in high school. She was a big highlight for all of us as we transitioned to Milton! Thank you for letting us share in her life and the welcome she gave us. I think one reason Carrie became an elementary teacher is what she saw Janet do in her life with her students-a truly gifted and amazing teacher! Blessing and strength for her family in this valley, is our prayer for you today.
