Elizabeth Anne "Betsy" Powell Henson Click for Condolences      Printable Version
1949 - 2022

Elizabeth Anne Elizabeth Anne “Betsy” Powell Henson of Hurricane, WV, passed away June 6, 2022. She was born in Morgantown, WV to E.G. “George” and Golda Powell on January 5, 1949. Betsy is survived by her son, Richard Kasel and her long-time companion, Pete Johnson. Also surviving are her brother, H.E. “Skip” Powell (Ida) of Barboursville, WV and sister, Nancy Powell Haines (Rodney) of Austin, Texas. In addition, nieces and nephews: John Powell (Nicole), Beth Ann Dudley (David), James Powell (deceased), David Powell, Russell Haines (Mary), and Amy Monkman (Jay); great nieces: Elaina Sowards (Joe); Carina Trimble (Tim), Waylon and Matix; Julie Tanner (Michael), Ellie, Mila and Maverick; Alexee Powell; Kendyl Powell; Mariah Gallegos; Ashley Lloyd (John), Emmy and Lucy; and Jasmine Parsons; great-nephews: Damian Dudley (Tanya); Joey Powell (Madeline), Avery and Austin; Christian Haines; Jeremy Powell (Susie), Ben, Kalee, and Isaiah; and long-time friends, Syvonne Kessell and Tammy Davis. Betsy worked in accounting and she retired from Powell, Inc. Betsy loved living. This showed in everything she did. She was a huge fan of West Virginia University sports and had season tickets for many years to watch Mountaineer football wherever they were playing and attended WVU basketball games several times a year. She was also a huge fan of NASCAR. Every Sunday the TV would be tuned into the race and Betsy would share her opinions of the race and drivers (mmhmm). Her favorite driver was Dale Earnhardt. She went to many races in person and especially loved Bristol Motor Speedway. For many years Betsy belonged to a bowling league and traveled with the gang to Cincinnati for tournaments. Besides sports, Betsy loved cooking. She perfected many of Grandma's recipes and created family favorites of her own like tiramisu and, of course, pepperoni rolls. No one ever left her house hungry or empty handed. Frogs and cats were the animals Betsy loved the most. She collected anything that had to do with frogs, but the best frog she had was the red-eyed frog tattoo that peered out above her bathing suit top. Her cats were spoiled and she never turned away a stray. Traveling made Betsy feel alive. She traveled a lot of places by motorcycle with Pete. Harley Davidson was THE motorcycle of choice. They took short and long drives throughout West Virginia and other states. They tried to stop at every Harley Davidson store they could to get a t-shirt specific to that store. Another form of travel was by air. She went with her sister, Nancy, to Ireland where they had such a good time driving on the wrong side of the road. The mountains were a favorite destination for Betsy. She went there for many years with family and friends to snow ski or be on the water. Her favorite place, though, was home with Pete and Richard. She had everything she cared about there. She also loved her rose bushes and couldn't wait for them to bloom each year. Betsy loved all her friends and family. The way she hugged, kissed, looked into our eyes and said she loved us was memorable. You just knew you were special to her. Betsy was an original and she will be greatly missed. To honor Betsy and her comfortable style, the family is choosing to wear blue jeans and tee shirts. So, come as you will, be comfortable and remember our sweet Betsy. Visitation will be at Wallace Funeral Home in Barboursville, WV on Tuesday, June 14, from 5-8 p.m. with a Celebration of Life on Wednesday morning, June 15, 2022 at 11 a.m. at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel, Barboursville. In lieu of flowers, please consider Hospice of Huntington or a charity of your choice.

Will miss Betsy so much. She was a dear friend with a big heart. We had many great times NASCAR races, Summerville boating trips, cookouts to many to list but a heart full of those memories. She loved our dog Tucker and Tucker loved her! She spoiled him with toys so much that he would stick his head into her purse or bag she was carrying when she came to the house. He just new she had brought him another “baby! That didn’t stop once we moved to Florida. She would send him packages addressed to him with new toys! Betsy I do want to apologize, we tried Betsy we really tried! She knows what I mean. Our hearts are heavy with your passing but your mind is once again sharp and your body is healthy. We will miss you so much Betsy! May you Rest In Peace. Till we meet again my friend.
