
Betty Joan Porter Cummings, 92, passed away on August 20, 2025 at her daughter’s home near Venice, Florida. Joan was a long-time resident of Huntington, Barboursville and Ona, West Virginia. She was a 1950 graduate of Huntington East High School. Joan was employed at the Huntington Store in the Art & Sign Dept and modeled both for newspaper and television. During this time, she played league basketball for 8 years and was an active member of the YWCA. Joan enjoyed decorating, gardening and antiquing. She was an exceptional seamstress and made her family’s clothes for many years. Joan was a member of the D.A.R. and a member of First Church of the Nazarene in Huntington. One of Joan’s gifts was her ability to care for and nurture others. Many have benefitted from her loving kindness.
Joan’s richest moments were those that involved her family. Surviving Joan are her daughters Pamela Joan Starr (Phil) of Venice, FL and Thalynn Harless (Keith) of Huntington, WV, her grandchildren Timothy Starr of Farmington Hills, MI, Katelyn Starr of Venice, FL, Taylor Harless of Huntington, WV and William Harless of North Port, FL, her sister Margie Singer (Lou) of Indian Land, SC, and her nieces and nephews and their families. Preceding Joan in death are her husband of over 50 years William H. Cummings, their son William H. Cummings Jr. (Billy), her mother Beaula Porter, her father Lonnie Porter, and her siblings Phyllis, Charles, and Paul.
Joan leaves behind her family and many friends. She is now celebrating in Heaven with those who have gone before her.
Services will be held on August 28, 2025 at Wallace Funeral Home in Barboursville, WV with Viewing at 10:00 a.m. and Service at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Ball’s Gap (Brown) Cemetery.
