On Sunday, Jan. 22, 2006, William Homer Edmond passed from this life to join his beloved wife, Ruth, in heaven, with his family by his side in Kingsbrook Lifecare Center. It was just a year ago that he had said goodbye to Ruth, and now they are reunited through Christ's amazing grace and love.
Homer was born Oct. 10, 1914, the fifth child of nine born of the late Arvel and Laura Colegrove Edmond. Three children died in infancy.
He had been working for Armco Rolling Mill for 14 years when he was called to serve his country, leaving behind a wife and three sons. He served with the 1st Army, 9th Infantry Division in the battles of Rhineland, Central Europe and Ardennes and was awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Distinguished Unit Citation and World War II Victory Medal.
He came back and continued his career at Armco, retiring in 1978 after 42 years working in East Processing. In the 1960s he took up golf, winning numerous tournaments, including Twin Valley Champion for 1960, 1962 and 1965, Armco Championship Flight winner in 1962 and Kentucky Amateur Championship Bellefonte Country Club in 1965. In 1980 and 1982 he was the Walter Hagen Golf Tournament Sectional Winner for the American Cancer Society, Kentucky Division. It was said with sponsorship, he could have become a pro. He continued to golf well into his 80s and was able to shoot his age.
He also was an avid hunter, fisherman and gardener. He passed the love of the outdoors to his sons and grandsons. They learned how to shoot, cast a fishing rod, swing a golf club and grow the best beans around. He will be sadly missed as they remember the good times they shared.
He was a member of Unity Baptist Church and came to an even deeper understanding of his faith in these last days he faced his death.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Menshouse Edmond; a son, James Edmond; two brothers, Arvel Jr., and Leonard Edmond of Baltimore; and three sisters, Betty Jean Roberts of Erlanger and Mary Louise Edmond and Virginia Estes of Ashland.
He leaves behind two sons, Homer Junior and Nancy Edmond of Tignall, Ga., and Gary and Nancy Edmond of Ashland; a sister, Minnebelle Tackett of Ironton; 10 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren.
There will be a celebration of his life at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, at Steen Funeral Home-Marshall Steen Chapel in Ashland by the Rev. Floyd Paris. There will be a graveside military service.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 27, and an hour before the service Saturday at the funeral home.
Donations may be made to Unity Baptist Church or First Church of God.
