Jason Michael Goodwin Click for Condolences      Printable Version
1981 - 2006

Jason Michael Goodwin began his new life with our Creator on Sunday, Feb. 19, 2006.

Jason, age 24, died on Sunday from injuries suffered in an automobile accident in Mount Sterling, Ky.

He was born on Nov. 20, 1981, in Metairie, La., a son of Dr. Michael Goodwin and wife Dana of Ashland, Ky., and Dr. Mary Burch Goodwin of Louisville, Ky.

He attended Paul G. Blazer High School and graduated from Carolina Springs Academy in 1999. He was attending the University of Kentucky, majoring in mechanical engineering, and was due to graduate in May. He was a member of the American Society for Mechanical Engineers and was employed by Kinimetrix Engineering. He was very involved in Christian Student Fellowship at UK. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Russell and attended Tates Creek Presbyterian Church and Southland Christian Church in Lexington, Ky.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by a brother, Jonathan Scott Goodwin of Ashland; two sisters, Lauren Gail Goodwin and fiance Joel Tucker of Asheville, N.C., and Sophie Elizabeth Goodwin of Louisville; a stepsister, Molly Catherine Tarr of Ashland; maternal grandparents Mrs. Sophie Burch of Lake Charles, La., and the late Wilmot Clyde Burch; paternal grandparents the late Gail Goodwin Bolton and Jim Goodwin; and stepgrandparents Janice and Don Dooley of Russell, Ky.

He was also survived by aunts Barbara Kordisch and husband Foster of Lake Charles and Nancy Hollingsworth and husband Larry of Louisville; uncles Jim Goodwin and his wife, Pat, of Austin, Texas, Sam Goodwin and his wife, Kim, of Arkadelphia, Ark., Joseph Stan Goodwin and his wife, Pam, of Denton, Texas, Richard Burch of Lafayette, La., and Bill Burch and his wife, Ann, of Nashville, Tenn. He also is survived by his best friend, T.J. Hood of Richmond, Ky., several cousins and a multitude of friends.

Baseball great Jackie Robinson said: “A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives.” Jason's life impacted so many people. His love for Christ overflowed and touched the lives of countless souls. Everyone who knew him loved him. His greatest joy was leading lost friends to Jesus. His seemingly short life was exactly the number of days ordained by God for him. His dream would be for others to know and follow Christ and to be reunited together with our Heavenly Father for all eternity.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2006, at First Baptist Church of Russell and officiated by the Rev. Ken Gowin.

Visitation will be from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. today, Feb. 21, 2006, at Steen Funeral Home-Marshall Steen Chapel in Ashland and after noon Wednesday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, friends may make contributions to the UK Christian Student Fellowship, 502 Columbia Ave., Lexington, KY 40508.

my life is truly changed by this, i feel confident in saying that not a day will go by that God does not use Jason. The revelation of how he impacted everyone for Christ has impacted me in a way that is only ongoing. I love all of you in his family, and you know this.

Mary, Mike and Dana--Words are never enough at a time like this. I am thinking of you all and my heart was gladdened to read of Jason's love for Christ. May God be with you and give you and your families the strength that you need at this time and on. Mary, I know that you and I lost touch with one another over the year, but I still think of our book and our psuedo intellectual discussions! If you ever feel like it, contact me...I think you have a birthday coming up. May God's peace be with you.

I'm sorry for your loss of Jason. I did not know Jason, He sounded like a amazing man living for God. I ask that God to be with families and friends as they go through this loss. God saw you were getting tired, and a cure was not meant to be. So he put his arms around you and whispered, "Come with me." With tearful eyes, we watched as you passed away; although we did love you deeply, we could not make you stay. Your golden heart stopped beating, hard working hands at rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us.. he only takes the best.

I am so sorry for your loss. Jason always seemed like a great person and was always a pleasure to be around. I consider it an honor to be his uncle. I apologize for not being able to go to the funeral.
