Robert A. “Duck” Darby, 76, of Ashland, Ky., died Saturday morning, April 22, 2006, in Hospice Care Facility in Ashland following a brief illness.

Mr. Darby was born Feb. 21, 1930, in Ashland, a son of the late Eldon R. Sr. and Frances M. Hughes Darby.

Mr. Darby was a retired custodian with Paul Blazer High School. He was a Korean War Army veteran who received the Dist. Unit Emblem, Army of Occupation Medal (Japan), Korean Service Medal with three bronze camp stars and the United Nations Service Medal with a bronze star medal. He was a life member of the VFW and of the Baptist faith.

He is survived by a son, Charles A. Darby and his wife Patricia of Boyd County, Ky.; two sisters, Pearl Whitt of Ashland and Nancy Maddox of Ashland; two granddaughters, Mindy Stanley and her husband Brent of Catlettsburg, Ky., and Jessica Spears and her husband Chris of Ashland; and two great-grandchildren, Lauren Brooke Spears and Dylan Andrew Stanley.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Eldon Darby Jr.

Military graveside services by the American Legion Kenova Post No. 93 will be at 1 p.m. Monday, April 24, 2006, in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens.

Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Monday at the Steen Funeral Home-Central Ave. Chapel in Ashland.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Community Hospice, 1538 Central Ave., Ashland, KY 41101.
