Robert Delmar “R.D.” Smith, 77, of Ashland, died Thursday, April 27, 2006, in Veteran's Hospital in Lexington, Ky.
“R.D.” was born Feb. 19, 1929, in Virgie, Ky., a son of the late Whitley and Nora Trivette Smith.
Mr. Smith was a graduate of Realtors Institute and helped establish real estate education programs at Morehead State University and Ashland Community College. He taught at both schools in the early 1970's. Mr. Smith was a real estate broker, as well as owner and operator of R.D. Smith Real Estate. He established the first real estate franchise in Ashland with Homes for Living Certified Property Manager. He was a director for the National Board of Realtors and a former investigator for the Kentucky Association of Realtors. He also served as president of Kentucky Association of Realtors in 1977.
Mr. Smith was of the Baptist faith. He was a member of Thomas Cecil Masonic Lodge F&AM No. 376, the Scottish Rite of Covington, Ky., and the El Hasa Shrine. He served in the Korean War in the Air Force.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Carl Smith, and a sister, Anna Moore.
He is survived by a brother, Ted Smith of Ashland; daughters, Jayne Whitaker and husband Bill of Mount Sterling, Ky., and Patti Baker and husband Tim of Ashland; a sister, Madelyn Osborne of Virgie; and a grandson, Jeremiah Robert.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 2, 2006, at Marshall Steen Funeral Home in Ashland with Dr. Ronnie Mayes. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park Mausoleum.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, May 1, 2006, at the funeral home.
