Carla Cecilia Helem, 52, of Ashland, died suddenly Thursday, April 27, 2006, at her home.

Carla was born June 3, 1953, in Glasgow, Ky., a daughter of the late Carl C. Helem and Jacquelyn Delores Coleman Helem of Ashland, Ky.

She graduated from Paul G. Blazer High School in 1971. She attended Morehead State University and the University of Kentucky prior to joining the Navy where she received her honorable discharge. Carla returned to college where she found much joy and success. She consistently made the dean's list at Ashland Community and Technical College. She received her associate's degree with honors. Loving school as much as she did, Carla did not stop there. She started classes at the Culinary School shortly thereafter.

Carla was a member of the New Hope Baptist Church where she did missionary work and attended Sunday school, which she loved, and was a member of the NAACP. Carla was a sincere, loving and honest woman who was dedicated to serving her mother.

In addition to her father, Carla was preceded in death by a sister, Bobetta Jo Helem. In addition to her mother, she is survived by one brother, Bruce Helem of Ashland. Carla was greatly loved and will be sadly missed by a host of relatives, friends and former classmates.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 2, 2006, at the New Hope Baptist Church by the Rev. Henry L. Mosley. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until service time on Tuesday at the church. Burial will follow in Ashland Cemetery.

Military services will be conducted by the American Legion Kenova Post No. 93.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to New Hope Baptist Church, 2717 Carter Ave., Ashland, KY 41101.

Steen Funeral Home- Central Avenue Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Helem and Bruce, I am so very sorry to hear about Carla. As you know she was a wonderful person who was talented in many ways and was loved and admired by many. She will be missed by all of us at the Center. God Bless and know you are in my thoughts and prayers.

Jackie and Bruce, You are in my prayers and thoughts. Keep God on your side, and with time, he will heal all pains. Carla is at rest now, just like Mama.
