Jerry E. Clark, 72, three-term Ashland City commissioner in the late 60’s and 70’s went to be with the Lord on July 4, 2006, in Dallas at the home of his daughter, Kimberly Poritz and family with his wife, Beverly at his side.
He was a graduate of Ashland High School in 1952. He was a two-time Kentucky Football Allstate in ‘50 and ‘51. He also received All Southern Honors his senior year.
He graduated from Marshall University in 1957. He had a football scholarship the first year but gave it up so that he could graduate in three years instead of four. He coached football and taught school in Jackson, Ohio, for six years. Jerry was also the first city recreation director for Jackson. In 1963, he taught school at Bonita Unified School District in San Dimas, Calif., for three years. He also worked for Los Angeles Recreation Department.
Jerry taught school in the Ashland system from 1966 until his retirement in 1994. He coached football for a while at Putnam Junior High School. He was principal and teacher at Ashland Day Treatment for several years. He earned a master’s degree from Morehead State University and a Rank I two years later.
He was a member of Unity Baptist Church.
Jerry’s hobby was world travel. He and Beverly visited every continent except Australia or Antarctica.
Jerry was preceded in death by his father, John Clark; his mother, Grace Boyd Clark Leadingham; and his stepfather, Gabe Leadingham.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Beverly Aylor Clark; his two daughters, Lee Ann Weinfurtner and her husband, Michael of Ashland, Ky., and Kimberly Clark Poritz and her husband, Michael of Dallas; his son, J. Steven Clark of Ashland; five grandchildren, Ryan Carter and his wife, Ginny of Georgia, Brad Clark and his wife, Jessica of Lexington, Ky., Jared Weinfurtner of Louisville, Ky., Adam Clark of Murray, Ky., and Bianca Poritz of Dallas; a stepgranddaughter, Gretchen Weinfurtner Leszcyzynski; and a great-granddaughter, Aria Carter.
Richard Aylor, his brother-in-law, will hold a eulogy and prayer service at the graveside at 1 p.m. at Rose Hill Burial Park on Saturday, July 8, 2006, for family and friends.
There will be no visitation.
Friends may make contributions to their favorite charity in Jerry’s memory.
