George Carl Borst Jr. - 1922-2006
George Carl Borst Jr., 83, of Ashland, Ky., died July 16, 2006, at his residence following an extended illness.
Mr. Borst was born Sept. 14, 1922, in Milford, Mass., and was the son of the late George Carl Sr. and Ruth Corbett Borst.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Eleanor Hallam.
He was a retired veterinarian who practiced in Ashland for 58 years. He was a veteran of World War II and served as a captain in the Army Veterinary Corps. He founded Ashland Pet Hospital when he moved to Ashland in 1949 and worked actively with the Humane Society during his professional career.
Mr. Borst was a member of the Kentucky and American veterinarian associations and attended Michigan State University on a full music scholarship. He played clarinet and saxophone and was the only full music scholarship recipient who did not major in music.
Surviving are his loving wife of 58 years, Helen Smitley Borst; a son, George Carl Borst III and his wife, Jan, of Ashland; two daughters, Tina Justice and her husband, Rodney, of Ashland and Shara Scanlon and her husband, Paul, of Lexington, Ky.; a brother, Kenneth Borst and his wife, Audrey, of Kingston, Mass.; and five grandchildren, Sean Borst, Sean Justice, Kevin Borst, Drew Justice and Cori Scanlon.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 20, 2006, at Steen Funeral Home-Marshall Steen Chapel in Ashland by the Rev. Gene Pillow. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 19, 2006, at the funeral home.
