Walter had three brothers and a sister whom he was very close to, James B. and his wife, Lorraine, Gerald L. and his wife, Dink, Paul D. and his wife, Dottie and sister, Katie H. Miller and her husband, Mike. He had many nieces and nephews. Walter also left behind many special people although he was sent to join many who preceded him in death.

Walter graduated from Boyd County High School in 1953. Directly after high school, Walter joined the U.S. Navy for four years, followed by another 12 in the Naval Reserves.
