Nina Mae (Thornbury) Mock - 1907-2006

Nina Mae (Thornbury) Mock died under the loving care of her family in Ashland, Ky., on Sunday, Aug. 6, 2006.

She was born June 24, 1907, in Pikeville, Ky., daughter of the late Sydney Grant Thornbury Sr. and Ida Mae Lee Thornbury.

Nina was educated in the Catlettsburg public school system and graduated from Eastern Kentucky University with a degree in education. She taught school in the Consolidated School System and rode horseback through the hills of Kentucky teaching those unable to attend a local school. During her teaching career, Nina lived in a dormitory run by Presbyterian missionaries.

Nina married Carl J. Mock, an Ashland businessman and owner of Mock Bros. Tires, on May 30, 1930. The wedding took place on Hampton Street in Ashland at her parents’ home. She was active in various civic and social organizations in and around the Ashland area. She was founder of the Girl Scouts Council of Ashland/Boyd County, founder of the Girl Scout Camp Cardinal in Greenup County, a member of the National Society of DAR and Southern Hills Garden Club and a former president of the Ashland Young Women’s Club.

In addition to her husband of 57 years, Carl J. Mock, she was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Nancy and Eva; and two brothers, Lester and Grant Jr.

She is survived by her nieces, Linda Thompson and husband Darrell of Hernando, Fla., and Suzanne Riddle of Ashland; nephews Sydney Grant Thornbury and wife Patricia of Ashland and Ernest Music and wife Lila of Novi, Mich.; and great-nephews Timothy P. Lofton and wife Holly of Springboro, Ohio, Timothy Riddle and wife Erin of Trabuco Canyon, Calif., David Riddle of Newport Beach, Calif., and Robert Lee Music and wife Andrea of Flagstaff, Ariz.

Funeral services will be by her nephew, Ernest W. Music, at the Old Ashland Cemetery Mausoleum at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2006, with entombment immediately following.

Steen Funeral Home-Marshall Steen Chapel in Ashland is in charge of arrangements.

There will be no visitation.
