Nancy Akins Anderson - 1933-2006

Nancy Anderson of Russell, Ky., died Monday, Aug. 28, 2006, in Cabell Huntington Hospital in Huntington, W.Va., after a sudden illness.

Mrs. Anderson was born Dec. 4, 1933, in Russell, the second daughter of the late Virgil Akins and Margaret Bird Akins.

Also preceding her in death was her husband, Darold Anderson.

After graduating first in her class from Raceland High School in 1951, she was employed by CSX Railroad. Initially employed as a clerk, she held various positions throughout the years and was currently employed as chief clerk. She was also a longtime member of the BRAC, the clerical union of railroad employees. In 2001, on her 50th anniversary with CSX, she was presented with a diamond pin for her many years of loyal and dedicated service. Throughout her career she received many citations and letters of achievement.

She was also a member of the Mistletoe Chapter 144 Order of Eastern Star.

Always kind and helpful, she will be sadly missed by her co-workers and friends alike.

Nancy is survived by two sisters, Saralyn (Gary) Lutz of Ironton, Ohio, and Katie (Ron) Taylor of Russell; two aunts, Josie Bird of Crawfordville, Ga., and Kate Leaphart of Royal Palm Beach, Fla.; an uncle, Glenn W. Akins of Salt Rock, W.Va.; nieces Debra (Bud) Christian, Sarabeth (Dennis) Parker and Emily Taylor, all of Ironton; a nephew, David (Linda) Lutz of Lexington; and three great-nephews, Todd (Karey) Christian and Zachary Christian, both of Richmond, Ky., and Seth Christian of Ironton.

As a memorial to her life, funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 1, 2006, at Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel in Ashland by Pastor David Webb. She will be laid to rest in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens.

Visitation for friends and family will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 31, 2006, at the funeral home.

While I know that this e-mail will not be posted, I will feel better having written it. I am Darold Anderson's daughter. Having read of Nancy's death, and seeing the comments made about her in the obituary as well as some of the posted messages, I see that no one really knew her at all. They forget that she was married to Eddie Warren when she started an affair with my father. They forgot that after I left a red rose on my father's grave, that she broke it in two, and left a note on his headstone saying that I needed to ask my now deceased mother who my real father was. They don't know how she insisted that I accept her as my stepmother, or else she would not allow my father to have contact with me. She even drove a wedge between my father and his sisters and brothers. Words like "Always kind and helpful", and "sweet and loving" stick in my throat. The woman was none of those things. Quite bluntly, she was a bitch and I for one am thrilled that she is dead. My only regret is that she will be buried beside my father. He was at least able to rest in peace in the grave until now.

It was with great saddness that I learned this morning of the passing of Ms. Nancy. I graduated from Russell High School in 1974 and in 1981 I went to work for Chessie System RR. Although working in Huntington, Raceland Baltimore, Newport News, VA, and Selkirk, Ny, my path has crossed Nancy's on many occasion. I loved her dearly and think that I am a better manager and friend today because of her. I am also very aware of the love and support she gave to "Nancy's boys". Many of the boys she helped and supported through jobs and paper routes were friends of mine. The community has lost a great and compassionate person. My prayers go with you. Mike McClave
