Gene E. Hemlepp - 1929-2006

Gene E. Hemlepp, 77, of Ashland, Ky., died Saturday, Sept. 2, 2006, in Wurtland Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

He was born July 18, 1929, in Ashland, a son of the late Paul and Esther Click Hemlepp. He was a retired captain of the Ashland Police Department where he served for 27 years. He was the captain of detectives, caretaker of Wildwood Park for the Armco Steel Corp., investigator for The Commonwealth for Judge David Hagerman and Stewart Schneider from 1988-1993.

He entered the Army in 1947, 101 Airborne Division. He was in the 25th infantry division, signal corps and in the Korean Conflict.

He was a member of First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ. He coached Babe Ruth Baseball for 15 years during which there was a state championship.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a special uncle, Uncle Dutch Hemlepp; two brothers, Charles and Joe Hemlepp; and a grandson, John R. Greene Jr. of Catlettsburg.

Mr. Hemlepp is survived by his wife of 54 years, Betty Barber Hemlepp, whom he married on Aug. 3, 1952; a son, David Gene Hemlepp of Ashland; a grandson Nicholas Hemlepp; a daughter, Robin Leigh Hemlepp Greene and husband John R. of Catlettsburg; daughter-in-law, Vicki Hemlepp of Catlettsburg; twin-brother, Jerry Hemlepp of Charleston, W.Va.; and brother, P.D. Hemlepp of Ashland.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2006, at Steen Funeral Home- Central Avenue Chapel in Ashland. The Rev. Charles Stewart and Stewart Schneider will officiate. Burial will be in Ashland Cemetery.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight, Sept. 4, 2006, at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, friends may make contributions to the Boyd County Academic Team, Boyd County High School, 12307 Midland Trail Road, Ashland, KY 41102 or Foundation for the Tri-State Community, for Lisa Price Memorial Scholarship Fund, 1999 Winchester Ave., Ashland, KY 41101.

Pallbearers will be Judge David Hagerman, Jeff Preston, Billy Lynch, Jerry Umberger, John Hemlepp and Pat Hemlepp.

It's been many years since I plyed coach Hemlepp on the FOP team but I've never forgot those fun times and how much I respected him.I hope you all keep all those special memories of your father,husband,grandpa or just a good friend close to your heart.I've been away from Ashland a long time now but have never forgot the Hemlepp's and all the positive experiences.May God bless you in your time of grief.
