Guy Flannery (1911-2006)
Guy Flannery, age 94, of Ashland, Ky., died Sept. 20, 2006, in King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland.
He was born Dec. 17, 1911, in Elliott County, Ky., a son of the late Rev. James H. and Martha Elizabeth Creech Flannery.
He was also preceded in death by a son, Guy Wendell “Pete” Flannery; four brothers, the Rev. Glenn Flannery, John Flannery, James Flannery and Wendell Flannery; and a sister, Margie Sparks.
He was a foreman at Perry Norvel Shoe Co. in Huntington, W.Va., had 26 years of service at the Selby Shoe Co. in Portsmouth, Ohio, and retired from Claude Fannin Wholesale in Ashland.
He was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran as a chief motor machinist on the LST-397 and served on every island in the Guadalcanal Campaign and Okinawa. He was a member of Ashland First Church of the Nazarene and a Sunday school teacher. He was a former member of the church’s board of trustees and former Sunday school superintendent.
Surviving are his wife, Emma Opal Stanton Flannery of Ashland; a daughter-in-law, Claire Flannery of New Orleans; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and a great-great-niece who loved him very much; and a host of friends.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 23, 2006, at Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel in Ashland by the Rev. John Hayes and Dr. Steve Ruby. Burial will be in Howard Church Cemetery in Camp Creek, Ohio.
