Billie Alice Spradlin

Billie Alice Spradlin, 81, died on Sept. 20, 2006.

She was the widow of Sammy J. Spradlin. Her son, Sammy J. Spradlin II, died in 1993.

She is survived by a daughter, Phaedra Spradlin; a cousin, Norvin Johnson Jr. and his wife, Carol; and other cousins.

Billie was the daughter of Chlora DeBord Warnick and Walter Warnick. She graduated from Ashland High School in 1942 and worked at Wright Aircraft in Cincinnati during the war. In 1945, she married Sammy J. Spradlin. Billie and her family became an Air Force family when Sam returned to the armed forces after the end of World War II. The family was transferred to numerous Air Force locations, including Anchorage, Alaska, and Lajes Air Force Base, Azores, Portugal.

Billie made numerous friends at each base and helped where she could to soften the harsh lives of people she encountered. While in Azores, Billie worked with the Protestant Women of the Chapel to bring food and clothing to orphans in the local orphanages. Billie continued her good work on behalf of others when she returned to Ashland.

She was a Hospice volunteer, caring for dying patients and raising money to assist with the costs of medicine and supplies. Billie was also active with the YWCA and helped with the establishment of the Abused Women and Children Shelter. Billie was an intelligent, loving and compassionate person. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 29, 2006, at Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel in Ashland.

Visitation will be after noon Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Ashland Cemetery.

Friends may make contributions to Community Hospice, 1538 Central Ave., Ashland, KY 41101 or Hospice of the Bluegrass, 2312 Alexandria Drive, Lexington, KY 40504-3277.

I used to pass the Ashland Daily to Sam and Billie backin the early 50's when I was in high school. They lived on Monroe St then. I always like both of them as they were really neat folks. It's hard to believe that the years have gone by so quickly. May God Bless your family at this time. Proverbs 3:5,6
