Susan, I only recently learned of Brenda's death. I was so terribly saddened. She was such a wonderful, loving friend when we were in our 20's playing softball. Dearly loved and it will take me a while to get used to this.

To all who loved Brenda - I played on her first basketball team in 1975, in Glasgow. She took a bunch of girl's that knew nothing about the game, and turned us into winners. She was such a positive in my life. Goodbye Coach.

First to Brenda, I am so sorry that your time on this earth and with those you loved was too short. I am also sorry that I hadn't seen you in the recent past. To Tammy, Susan, and Sharon my deepest sympathies...I knew Brenda from EKU, a long time ago, when many of us became friends. I moved back to NJ over 30 years ago but when I heard of Brenda's passing, I felt like it was just yesterday we were all in Richmond. She was a special person and I know she was loved and will be sorely missed.

SHE ALSO LIVED BESIDE MY GRANDPARENTS ON CREST STREET. SHE WAS NEAT KID. I AM SO SORRY THAT TIME AND DISTANCE KEPT US APART, BUT SHE WAS AND WILL REMAIN ALWAYS IN MY HEART.

It is sad to lose touch with a friend due to distance and time. It is devastating to lose that same friend to death. We feel fortunate to have shared a portion of Brenda's life with our own. There are no words to describe what a remarkable person she was. Goodbye friend....

Sharon and Susan I am so sorry for your loss of Brenda, I just found out tonight after leaving the hospital for my father. If I would have known I would have been there at Steens Funeral for the viewing. I know there are no words that can help at this time, but just remember all the good times that we shared, and that Brenda is at peace. I will always remember all the good times on Crestview, and at the farm. I will cherish in my heart all the times we all had, like playing cowboys and indians!! Driving the jeep and chasing cows! If there is anything that I can do, please let me know. You all are in my prayers. Love Bonnie

The Lord puts so many people in our paths, and all of them fill a certain purpose in our lives. Brenda's purpose for me, I believe, was to show me how important unconditional friendship is. I never knew her too closely but had several classes with her when we were at Putnam Junior High School in the 1960s. I especially remember her as part of our art classes at Putnam with art teacher Ruth Ettling. We were in the same grade and of the same age, so her death is especially poignant to me. I particularly remember her genuine friendliness and encouraging smile even when other students around her were behaving less than exemplary. Her love and sparkling eyes shone through every circumstance, as I recall, and I count her as one of the signficant pieces in my life that keep me true to my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Granted, there were many such pieces, but Brenda was an important one whose value cannot be measured.
