Paul Wesley Grumbles - 1923-2006
Paul Wesley Grumbles, 83, died on Dec. 9, 2006, in Hattiesburg, Miss., following an extended illness.
He was born Aug. 26, 1923, in Johnson County, Ky., a son of the late Rev. S.D. and Sarah Martin Grumbles.
He was a member of First Baptist Church of Ashland, Ky., a graduate of Ashland Senior High School in 1941, attended Ashland Junior College from 1941 to 1942, graduated from the University of Kentucky in 1948 and graduated from the School of Banking of South Louisiana State University in 1962. He served as vice president and trust officer of Second National Bank from 1948 to 1965. He organized the Bank of Ashland in 1966 and was president and CEO from 1966 through 1988 and served as chairman of the board from 1988 until 1999.
He was past president and director of the Ashland Rotary Club, chairman of the United Way, director of the Ashland Area YMCA, director of the Bellefonte Country Club, director of the Ashland Area Foundation, director of the Huntington Museum of Art, a member of the Ashland Community College Board of Trustees, a member of finance committee of First Baptist Church and elected to the Junior Achievement Hall of Fame in 1996. He was a UK Fellow and voted Ashland Outstanding Young Man by the Jaycees in 1958. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a tailgunner in World War II and saw action in Europe.
Mr. Grumbles is survived by his wife of 57 years, Charlotta Munro Grumbles; a son, David Gumbles and his wife, Erin, of Fort Collins, Colo.; a daughter, Sally Hanbury and her husband, John “Jack,” of Hattiesburg; brothers S.D. Grumbles of Springboro, Ohio, Dr. Cecil Grumbles and wife Betty of Louisville and Creed Grumbles of Lancaster, Ohio; and a sister, June Haus and husband Thilo of Fort Collins.
He was preceded in death by his sisters, Kathryn Galloway and Joy Slavens.
He also is survived by grandchildren Kate and Ben Grumbles of Fort Collins, John Hanbury Jr. of Richmond, Va., and Paul and David Hanbury of Hattiesburg; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 16, 2006, at First Baptist Church in Ashland by the Rev. Quentin Lockwood. Burial will be in Ashland Cemetery. Military rites will be performed by American Legion Post 93.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel in Ashland.
