LeOra Jayne Skaggs - 1910-2007

LeOra Jayne Skaggs, 96, of Pompano Beach, Fla., formerly of Paintsville, Ky., and who had resided in Fleming, Lexington, Pittsburgh and Boca Raton, Fla., died Jan. 22, 2007, in Pompano Beach following a brief illness.

She was born Oct. 27, 1910, in Flatgap, Ky., a daughter of the late Ernest and Minnie Holbrook Jayne.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Ernest G. Skaggs, in 1968; three brothers, Dr. Hershel Jayne, Dr. Edgar Jayne and James Jayne; and a sister, Carrie Faye Jones.

She was a homemaker and avid gardener. She was a member of First Baptist Church and the Pittsburgh Garden Club. She received the Gardener of the Year award in 1992 at the age of 82.

Surviving are three daughters, Ernestine Skaggs and husband Jeff of Fort Pierce, Fla., Phyllis Simmerman and husband Gerald of Fort Myers, Fla., and Caralyne Bachi and husband Phil of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; a brother, Bill Jayne of Atlanta; a sister, Irene Gardner of Charlotte, N.C.; grandchildren Grayson Gilbert, Sherry Gilbert and Todd Simmerman; and great-grandchildren Sierra Simmerman and Ethan Simmerman.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, 2007, at Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel in Ashland, Ky., by the Rev. Lud Weaver Jr. Burial will be in Ashland Cemetery.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 26, 2007, at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Billy Graham Ministry, Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, One Billy Graham Parkway, Charlotte, NC 28201 or a charity of choice.
