Anna Elizabeth Campbell Woodward of Ashland completed her journey through life and entered eternity on Friday, Jan. 26, 2007.
She was born Nov. 25, 1907, in Martel, Tenn., the daughter of the late Andrew Lamar and Anna Cordelia Campbell. She was blessed with a very long and productive life. Only three generations separated from her and her great-grandfather, a Revolutionary War veteran.
She graduated from Farragut High School in Farragut, Tenn., in 1925 and from Maryville College in Maryville, Tenn., in 1929. That same year she came to Buckhorn, Ky., arriving by horse because of the lack of roads. She taught home economics at the Presbyterian-affiliated Witherspoon College until 1939.
After teaching in Buckhorn, she served with the Roosevelt administration’s Farm Security in Wolfe, Carter and Greenup counties. At the onset of World War II, she returned to Tennessee and worked on the Manhattan Project at Oak Ridge. Afterwards, she was responsible for payroll services at the National Airport in Washington, D.C., until 1948.
In June 1948, she returned to Kentucky and married Given M. Woodward of Germantown, Ky. She was a teacher for many years at Minerva High School in Mason County. She continued to teach in the science department of Mason County High School until her retirement in 1978.
Mrs. Woodward was a member of Sharon Presbyterian Church, the Fernleaf Homemakers, Order of Eastern Star, the Limestone Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution and the Mason County Retired Teachers Association.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Given Marcus Woodward Sr.; a daughter, Anne Woodward; two brothers, David A. Campbell and James E. Campbell; and a sister, Ada Belle Campbell Howard.
Mrs. Woodward is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, G. Marcus and Sandy Woodward of Ashland; two sisters, Ellen Josephine Campbell Robinson of Richmond, Ind., and Neta Lynn Campbell Lawhorn of Knoxville, Tenn.; and a brother, John Steele Campbell of Concord, Tenn.
Visitation and memorial services will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 28, at Steen Funeral Home-Marshall Steen Chapel in Ashland.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Palmer Funeral Home in Germantown.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 30, at Sharon Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in the Maplegrove Cemetery in Germantown.
