Elwood Gibbs (1929-2007)

Elwood Gibbs, 77, of Greenup, Ky., died Friday, March 30, 2007, at the home of his stepson following an extended illness.

Mr. Gibbs was born Dec. 9, 1929, in Ashland, a son of the late B.E. and Nannie Cantrell Gibbs.

Elwood’s first job was helping his parents at the 13th Street Market and later the Big Mug Inn. He owned and operated the Catlettsburg Market in the 1950s. He and his father, B.E. Gibbs, constructed the Non-Denominational God’s Rescue Mission Church of 13th Street. Elwood pastored the church for several years, as well as having a TV. and radio ministry. He was also the owner of Kitchens Inc. on 13th Street. He was the manager of Gibbs Hardware during the 1960s, as well as Gibbs Discount Building Supply, Gibbs Campers and Gibbs Auto Auction on Russell Road. He helped with the operation of Rockdale Jamboree country western music. He was co-owner of Ben-Coal in the 1970s. He sold houses for his brother, Carl, in his home building business in the 1970s. He was co-owner of Bonanza Restaurant, which he ran with his son, Rocky, and daughters, Jenny and Jetta. He ran the Hillbilly Flea Market on Russell Road for 18 years with his wife, Barbara. They owned and operated the Country Store at the Hillbilly Flea Market location at the lower end of the parking lot until it was destroyed by fire four years ago.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Jim Gibbs.

Mr. Gibbs is survived by his wife, Barbara Blevins Gibbs of Greenup; sons, Rocky Gibbs and wife Lee of Ashland, Mark Gibbs of Ashland, Scott Ball and wife Rose of Florida, Billy Ball and wife Julie of North Carolina and Mark Ball and wife Jennifer of Ashland; daughters, Jenny Gibbs of Sebring, Fla., Jetta Kennan and husband Don of Ashland, Kathy Gibbs of Ashland and Myra Daniels and husband Roger of Ashland; brothers, Carl Gibbs of Ashland and Tony Gibbs of Ashland; sisters, Wanda Dickens and husband Vernon of Ashland, Gloria Wenning of Ashland, Janet Marsh of Ashland and Lou Adkins and husband Charles of Ashland; numerous grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, 2007, at Steen Funeral Home-Marshall Steen Chapel in Ashland by Dr. Ronnie Mayes and Redwood Hogsten. Burial will be in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 tonight, April 2, 2007, at the funeral home.

Friends may make contributions to Community Hospice, 1538 Central Ave., Ashland, KY 41101.

I'm very sorry for your loss. I'll miss Uncle Elwood. The first time my husband met him, Elwood was wearing a ten gallon hat, had his arms loaded with Christmas presents, bellowing out "Merry Christmas!!!" as he walked into a family gathering. He had such energy--that's how I'll always remember him.
