George T. Melvin Jr. (1928-2007)

George T. Melvin Jr., 79, of Ashland, Ky., died Tuesday morning, May 8, 2007 in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.

Mr. Melvin was born Jan. 1, 1928, in Weldon, N.C., a son of the late George T. Melvin Sr. and Pearl Lloyd Melvin.

In addition, he was preceded in death by his wife, Tommie Leslie Melvin, in 1990.

He retired after 30 years of service as supervisor with Ashland Oil Inc. He was a member of Wildwood Baptist Church and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and a corpsman in the Marine Corps during the Korean War.

Surviving are two sons, George T. Melvin III and his wife, Debbie, of Ashland and David S. Melvin Sr. of Catlettsburg, Ky.; two daughters, Margaret Legh Gottlieb of Beverly Hills, Calif.,and Sharon Manning of Catlettsburg; a brother, William L. Melvin of Littleton, N.C.; 10 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday, May 11, 2007, at Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel in Ashland by the Rev. Jim Nichols. Entombment will be in Rose Hill Burial Park Mausoleum, with a military service by American Legion Kenova Post 93.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Contributions may be made to the Wildwood Baptist Church Building Fund, 3414 Charles St., Ashland, KY 41101.
