Charles Eugene Dansby (1913-2007)
Charles Eugene Dansby, 93, of Bellefonte, Ky., died May 10, 2007 in Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital of an extended illness.
He was born Nov. 18, 1913, in Scooba, Miss., a son of the late Charles Eugene Taylor and Alice Bell Adams Dansby.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian Maggard Dansby in 2002; a daughter, Alice Marie Dansby; a sister, Dorothy Louise Adams Dansby Perel; and a brother, Dr. Walter Adam Dansby.
He was vice president and treasurer of Guyan-Eagle Coal Co., president of Boone County Coal Co. in Huntington, W.Va., vice president of Greenbrook Coal Co., and founder of Universal Fuel Sales in Huntington. He was also VP of sales with Logan and Kanawha Coal Co. in Cincinnati.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Ashland, where he taught Sunday School and served on the board of directors. He was a Kentucky colonel, played baseball for the Meridian Metros Cotton State League and Memphis Chicks in the Southern State League and in 1934, played for the St. Louis Cardinals when they defeated the Detroit Tigers in the World Series.
He was an avid tennis player and swimmer and enjoyed golf and cards. He made major contributions in genealogical research.
Surviving are a son, John Walter Dansby and wife, Dr. Karen Dansby, of Sedona, Ariz.; twin daughters, Jane Louise Dansby of Ashland, Ky., and Sarah Ellen McMeekin of Lexington, Ky.; grandchildren, Louis Charles McMeekin and wife, Mary Frances, of Greensboro, N.C., Michael Edwin McMeekin and special friend, Mary Jackson of Lexington, Andrew Navarin Dansby and wife, Nicole of Houston, and David Revere Dansby and fiancee, Bettie Antrim of Washington, D.C.; and great-grandchildren, Lillian Frances McMeekin, Jacob Michael McMeekin and Hazel Jane Dansby.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. today, May 12, 2007 at Ashland Cemetery Mausoleum Chapel by the Rev. Gene Pillow. Burial will be in Ashland Cemetery.
