Norman “Dutch” Berry - 1921-2007
Norman “Dutch” Berry, 85, former Ashland City Commissioner, was called home by his Lord and Savior on Friday, June 1, 2007.
“Dutch” was born Dec. 15, 1921, in Ashland, Ky., a son of the late Samuel and Ada Miller Berry. He was a lifelong resident of South Ashland.
In addition to his parents, Dutch was preceded in death by his loving wife of 57 years, Ann Cannon Berry; and his sisters, Georgia Berry Hunt, Mary Berry Brickey and Ethel Berry Burnett.
He is survived by his children, Barbara Buyalos of Columbus, Ohio, Tom Berry and his wife Kathy of Ashland and Sam Berry and his wife Susan of Ashland; his grandchildren, Matt Buyalos and Zoe Buyalos of Columbus, Robby Berry, Justin Daniels and Lindsay Daniels, all of Ashland; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
Dutch spent his years as an active member of his community and in his lifetime had a long list of accomplishments.
He attended Ashland High School and Morehead State University where he was a member of both the basketball and football teams. After college, he enlisted in the military and served his country as a B-25 pilot in the Pacific during World War II.
Dutch spent the majority of his days as a local business owner of Ashland Floor Co. and as a Commissioner for the City of Ashland, serving 18 years. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Ashland. He was also a member of both the Ashland Elks and the El Hasa Shrine Temple, Poage Lodge No. 325 and served on the board of directors for the YMCA.
Dutch will be sadly missed by all of his family and friends, and his accomplishments and contributions in this life will never be forgotten.
Funeral services for Dutch will be at noon Tuesday, June 5, 2007, at Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel in Ashland by the Rev. Quentin Lockwood. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Burial Park.
Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday, June 4, 2007 and from 11 a.m. till service time Tuesday at the funeral home.
Poage Lodge No. 325 will have a Masonic service at 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
