James Robert Qualls, Sr.James Robert Qualls Sr. (1930-2007)

James Robert Qualls Sr., 77, of Ashland, Ky., died Aug. 8, 2007, in King’s Daughters Medical Center.

Mr. Qualls was born March 18, 1930, in Ashland, a son of the late Ora Dempsey Qualls Sr. and the late Tempie Clark Qualls.

He was also preceded in death by a brother, Ora Dempsey Jr.; and two sisters, Carrie LaBorde and Edna White.

He was a retired captain with the Ashland Fire Department with 23 1/2 years of service and was self-employed with Qualls and Son Heating and Air Conditioning for 50 years.

He was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Betty Jean Smeltzer Qualls of Ashland; sons James Robert Jr. (Penny) Qualls of Argillite, Ky., Gregory Alan Qualls and Michael Curtis (Charlene) Qualls, both of Ashland, and Timothy Brian (Linda) Qualls of Pedro, Ohio; daughters Carmen “Sis” Marie (Anthony) Hankins of Catlettsburg, Ky., and Kimberly Jean (Billie) Jones of Kitts Hill, Ohio; brothers Dan J. Qualls of Ashland and Don Qualls of Russell, Ky.; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 10, 2007, at Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel in Ashland by the Rev. Charles Stewart. Burial will be in Highland Memorial Gardens in South Point, Ohio.

Members of the Ashland Fire Department will serve as pallbearers.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today, Aug. 9, 2007, at the funeral home.

betty and kids, dad and i are so very sorry about jim. I'm so glad we came and saw him a couple of months ago. Dad is in columbus this week trying to get his license back. He won't be home until friday night, so we won't make the funeral, but our prayers and thoughts are with you all. WE will try to get down to see you soon.
