
George M. Nickell - 1925-2007
George M. Nickell, 82, of Westwood, died Dec. 30, 2007, in KIng’s Daughters Medical Center.
Mr. Nickell was born June 5, 1925, in Akron, a son of the late George K. and Rachel Lyons Nickell. He was preceded in death by a stepmother, Alka May Nickell; a wife, Mildred Webb Nickell; two brothers, Hillard and Hobert Nickell; and four sisters, Esther, Ruth and Betty Jean Nickell and Maxine Harkovitch.
Mr. Nickell was a crane operator in East Processing at AK Steel for 38 years, was a Kentucky colonel, a member of Eagles and a World War II veteran who served in Germany in the Battle of Normandy.
He was an avid UK fan and played semi-pro football. He had a love of life, was a vibrant, highly intelligent man who loved his family and was always there for them. He was fully generous, good hearted and very well loved. While in the hospital, he accepted the Lord Jesus Christ into his heart and he is now in the arms of angels.
He is survived by two sons and their wives, Gary and Barbara Nickell of Middletown, Ohio, and Ricky and Robin Nickell of Russell; a daughter, Barbara Nickell Morroe of Catlettsburg; grandchildren Michelle Nickell, Wendy Morroe Clark, Angela Nickell and Gary Nickell Jr.; stepgrandchildren Teressa Smith, Crystal Townsend, Kelena Stapleton and Devin McClurg; great-grandchildren Quinten and Casey Clark and Hope Clark, who was adopted from China, Nola Grant Nickell, Tori Bailey and Shelby Greene; and stepgreat-grandchildren Chloe Townsend, Landon Stapleton, Natasha and Alexandra Smith and Darrell Trivette.
He is also survived by his loving dog, Riley O’Dell.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan, 2, 2008, at Steen Funeral Home-Marshall Steen Chapel by the Rev. Michael Locklear and the Rev. Charlie Denny. Burial will be in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens, with military rites by Kenova American Legion Post 93.
Friends may call after 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Adam Stapleton, Wes Townsend, James Clark, Devin McClurg, Gary Nickell Jr. and Terry Frazier.
