Hazel June BaileyHazel “June” Skaggs Bailey - 1924-2008

Hazel “June” Skaggs Bailey, 83, of Ashland, Ky., widow of Cecil Dean Bailey, died on Monday, Jan. 7, 2008, in Community Hospice Care Center.

Mrs. Bailey was born June 11, 1924, in McRoberts, Ky., and was raised in Fleming, Ky., until 1940 when her family moved to Ashland.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. H.R. and Carrie Holbrook Skaggs; a brother, Hargis R. Skaggs; and a sister, Ruth Withers of Georgetown, Ky.

She was a retired teacher employed by Ashland Independent School District for 21 years. She was a member of Normal Presbyterian Church, a 1942 graduate of Ashland High School, attended Sullins College and graduated with a BA degree from Marshall College in 1947.

Surviving are two sons, Michael Dean Bailey and his wife, Linda, of Lexington, Ky., and John Mark Bailey and his wife, Lynn, of Ashland; a daughter, Karen Sue Williams and her husband, Randy, of Ashland; a sister, Opal S. Conley of Ashland; six grandchildren, Drew Bailey, Bo Bailey, Cassie Bailey, Dori Williams, Michelle Harrod and Trisha Spiller; and four great-granddaughters, Chloe Spiller, Madelyn Spiller, Bailey Harrod and Abigail Harrod, all of Lexington. She is also survived by five nieces and nephews, Richard Conley, Jilson McClanahan, and Tré McClanahan, all of Ashland, Tom Withers of Georgetown and Dr. Patricia Williams of Murfreesboro, Tenn.

The funeral will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2008, at Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel in Ashland by the Rev. Susan Alley. Burial will be in Ashland Cemetery.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today, Jan. 8, 2008, and after 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, friends may make contributions to Community Hospice, 1538 Central Ave., Ashland, KY 41101 or Normal Presbyterian Church Women, 4316 Winchester Ave., Ashland, KY 41101.

My deepest sympathy to your family on the loss of your mother. Mrs. Bailey was my homeroom teacher for three years at Coles Jr. High and was always so very kind to me.

On behalf of my mother, Irene Starkey, my family and myself I would like to express our deepest condolences to the Bailey family. Hazel was a wonderful friend who brightened our lifes in numerous ways. Her soft spoken manner and quick wit will be missed greatly.
