Paul F. Spence, 88, of Ashland, Ky., died Jan. 29, 2008, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland following an extended illness.

Mr. Spence was born Aug. 11, 1919, in Ashland, a son of the late Charles and Eliza Morman Spence.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis Cox Spence; his stepfather, John Ison; two brothers, John and Lawrence Spence; and two sisters, Beulah Fraley and Irene Smith.

He was retired from Armco Steel Corp. in maintenance planning and scheduling. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, a member and past master of Poage Masonic Lodge 325, F&AM, and a member of South Ashland Lions Club and Ashland Chapter 119, Order of Eastern Star. He was a Kentucky colonel.

Surviving are a daughter, Judie Spence Hogg, and husband Neil of Ashland; two brothers, Lonnie Spence of Washington State and J.D. Ison of Sheybogan, Wis.; a sister, Dorothy Devere of Berea, Ky.; and his fiancee, Margaret Yancey.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 1, 2008, at Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel in Ashland by the Rev. Gene Pillow and the Rev. Don Young. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, 2008, at the funeral home, where there will be a Masonic service at 7.

Friends may make contributions to First United Methodist Church, 1811 Carter Ave., Ashland or Community Hospice, 1538 Central Ave., Ashland.
