Jack B. HanksJack B. Hanks (1930-2008)

Jack B. Hanks, age 78, of Ashland passed away Friday, May 16, 2008, at Boyd Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, with his family by his side.

He was born May 6, 1930, in Russell to the late John C. and Flores Fleming Hanks. He was raised in Willard and graduated from Hitchins High School. He proudly served in the U.S. Army and graduated from Frazier Institute of Barbering in Louisville. He was employed by Osbornes Barber Shop before starting Jacks Barber Shop in 1955. He later became co-owner of Roffler of Ashland with his present business partner, Buck Mullins, of 47 years. He helped pioneer hair replacement in the Tri-State area when starting Jack Hanks Hair Replacement in 1969. He was a former distributor for New Man Hair Replacement and franchise owner of HRS hair replacement.

He loved his family, the Lord and his church. He enjoyed fishing, boating, vacationing with his family, walking, relaxing outdoors and working. He was a member of Ashland Plaza church of the Nazarene and a former board member. He was a former bluegrass musician and loved southern gospel music.

Surviving are his wife, Geneva Kitchen Hanks; a daughter, Debbie Jennings of Ashland and her son, Brandon Nabors, of Nashville, Tenn.; son, Jack D. Hanks and his wife, Tina, and their son, Isaiah of Ashland; siblings, Howard Hanks of Ashland, Tom Hanks of Columbus, sister, Shirley Seagraves of Johns Run and many nieces, nephews and friends too numerous to list.

He also was preceded in death by a brother, the Rev. Clyde Hanks of Columbus.

He will be sadly missed and forever in our hearts.

In honor of Jack, visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Steen Funeral Home, Marshall Steen Chapel, 3409 13th St.

Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Monday, May 19, at Ashland Plaza Church of the Nazarene, with Pastor Kevin Campbell and Pastor Rob Hale officiating. Final resting place will be in Rose Hill Mausoleum in Ashland.

Hanks Family, I am so sorry for your loss. I have such wonderful memories of Mr. Hanks. He was such a kind, warm hearted, caring man. I'll never forget the Easter he welcomed me with open arms to celebrate the day with his family. Also, the lovely memories and conversations we would have at Western Hills Restaurant. What a delight, always putting a Smile on your face. God bless your family, Susan Tygart

Geneva, Debbie, & Jackie, You all are in our thoughts and prayers. I wish I could have been there to give you a hug. What wonderful memories you have of happy times. I have fond memories of our trips to Nashville together. I remember taking Patrick & Sean to the barber shop and having Jack cut their hair telling them he had cut both of their grandfathers' hair, their Dad, and uncles' hair. They thought that was pretty neat. I have always treasured the story Jack told Tom when Ray died of when Ray brought Tom & Jimmy to the barber shop he would always read them stories as they waited rather than handing them magazines while he read his own. Jack told Tom he could tell what a wonderful loving father Ray was by that example. That was so kind of Jack to share that story. I pray that God's love and comfort will lead you through this time of grief. Love, Jana
