Ione Hicks Morefield Click for Condolences      Printable Version 1908 - 2008 Ione Hicks "Tootie" Morefield - 1908-2008 Ione Hicks "Tootie" Morefield, age 100, of Flatwoods, Ky., died Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2008, in Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital. Mrs. Morefield was born June 12, 1908, in Craigsville, Va., a daughter of the late Lloyd E. and Lucy Kyle Hicks. In addition, she was preceded in death by husbands, Bernard Richard Gorman and Charles E. Morefield; six brothers and two sisters. She worked for many years as a registered nurse in the Clifton Forge, Va., area, was a member of the Calvary Episcopal Church and was a Kentucky colonel twice. Surviving are three sons, Richard A. (Brenda) Gorman of Los Alamatos, Calif., William H. (Frankie) Gorman of Lynchburg, Va., and Raymond L. Gorman of Harrisburg, Ill.; a daughter, Barbara Dee (Mark) Smith of Covington, Va.; a former daughter-in-law, Drema (Marvin) Gardner of Richmond, Va.; a sister, Rosalind Pierce of Staunton, Va.; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, 2008, at Calvary Episcopal Church by the Rev. Mann S. Valentine IV. Burial will be in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel in Ashland. Contributions may be made to Calvary Episcopal Church, 1337 Winchester Ave., Ashland, KY 41101. I knew Ione when she was married to Charles Morefield. Ada and Clarence Morefield were my aunt and uncle. I met Ione at several family gatherings and always found her to be a friendly, upbeat person and certainly fun to be around. I am sure she will be missed by her children and grandchildren.

My family had the wonderful good fortune of having Tootie for a neighbor during all of my formative years. She was such a caring neighbor and wonderful family friend. On behalf of my family, James, Rosie and Sharon Clark who are now deceased as well, let me express to you how much she was loved by us. I will be forever grateful for her love and influence!! Tim

It has been a pleaure this past 20 years to be her hairdresser. We have shared alot with each other. She spoke of her family so much over the years, I feel like I know all of you. She was a remarkable woman, her wisdom her desire to be so independent, her sharp wit. There are a lot of people who pass through our lives, some we forget with time, and some will remain in our hearts forever. She was one of those we will always remember. Your loss is heaven's gain.

Our family wishes to pay our respects to your family on the loss of your mother. She was such a special friend and best of neighbors for mom. Mom was not able to visit at the funeral home due to illness, but would have been there if it had been possible. Please know that we enjoyed our visits with your mother and she will be missed. God bless your family at this time.

I am sad to hear of Tootie's passing. I would have liked to have gotten to know her. She was my great aunt. My condolences to the family.
