Ruth Evelyn UlmerRuth Evelyn Ulmer - 1907-2009

II Tim. 4:7: I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.

Ruth Evelyn Ulmer went to be with her Lord on Jan. 25, 2009.

She was born July 11, 1907, in Hepburn Township, Lycoming County, Pa., the daughter of the late Thomas L. and Ida Jane Waltz Ulmer.

Ruth grew up on her parents farm near Balls Mills, Pa. Born again into Gods family at the age of 10, she was baptized and accepted into the membership of Hepburn Baptist Church, Cogan Station, Pa., in 1917.

She graduated from Philadelphia School of the Bible in Philadelphia, Pa., in 1930 and attended Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1931, also in Philadelphia.

Upon completion of her schooling, Ruth served the Lord at Green Pasture Jewish Mission in Brooklyn, N.Y., and then in the youth ministry of the local church in Mehoopany, Pa.

In 1932, from deep in the mountains of eastern Kentucky, there came a call for help. A missionary had to leave her field of service due to illness. Would someone please come and take over her work? So Ruth, like Abraham, went out by faith, not knowing wither he went (Hebrews 11:8). Virgie, Ky., was not even on the map but the Lord was leading and she followed. There was no promise of support so she stood firmly on Phillipians 4:19: God promised he would provide. She had nine wonderful thrilling years sharing His word with the people of Virgie.

Through the years, there followed other areas of service: Printer, Ky. ,for 10 years, at Volga, Ky., for 27 years and finally at Ashland, Ky., working in the local church in Sunday School work and visitation ministry.

All who knew Ruth were impressed by her gentle spirit. From time to time she would come back to Pennsylvania where she was always invited to speak at churches in the local area. She told of different experiences that revealed her love for God and the people she served.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, Nelson W. Ulmer, T. Theodore Ulmer and her sisters, Florence A. Gehr and Gertrude E. Paulhamus.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 29, at the Summit Church of the Nazarene with Pastor Tim Daniels officiating. Burial will follow in Coalton Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements are by Steen Funeral Home-13th Street Chapel in Ashland.

I knew Miss Ruth from Woodland Oaks. She came there not to long after I started working there in 2001. I loved her the moment I met Her. Ruth was always very special to me. I work on the hall that her room was on so I took care of her all the time, so we became very close friends. Thats a friendship I will never forget. I miss her alot. But she is where she wants to be now. But she will always be in our hearts.

Aunt Ruth lived a nice long journey here on earth, just like her Mother, my Grandma Ulmer. Now, she will live forever in the light of our Lord and Savior. I miss her sweet smile and the lovely script of her notes and letters to me here in Covina,Calif.

I remember Ruth from our church services at Woodland Oaks. She always had a smile on her face just like God radiated through her. She was a lovely lady. We will miss her.

Many years ago there were two Missionary ladies. Miss Marie Gay and Miss Ruth Ulmer who were the teachers, bus drivers, youth directors, song and music leaders, whatever needed done and care takers of the Cannon's Chapel Methodist Church of Volga, KY. Miss Ruth was also caretaker of our young minds, hearts and souls. It was at this church that we were blessed with such a wonderful light of God. We Loved Her.

I never knew Ruth but just happened to read her obituary in the Williamsport Sun Gazatte What a wonderful testimony her obituary is. Her selflessness - faithfulness and love for the Lord puts me to shame. when you think of the way many try to leave their mark in the world (those who accumulate wealth - movie stars - wall street corporate types etc) will stand far to the back of the line when that final accounting takes place while quiet unassuming Ruth (I am quite sure)will one of the shining stars in heaven. What a wonderful and inspiring obituary.

Ruth lived with her missionary friend Marie, next to my parents, AN & Laura Lester, at Gla-Low in Ashland for several years. My parents were retired pastor and wife. The four of them meant so much to each other. They took care of each other and had some wonderful times together. My parents have been gone for ten years. I am quite certain they are joyously welcoming Ruth into heaven!

Ms. Ulmer was a relative and very good friend of my grandmother, Evelyn Menne, Cogan Station PA. My grandmother shared many stories of their growing up and Ms.Ulmer kept in much contact by phone and letters with my grandmother. Ms. Ulmer had a very wonderful and prosperous life serving the Lord and I am sure Kentucky will be sorry to see her go. My prayer is that we can all serve the Lord as Ms. Ulmer did.

Our deepest sympathy to family of Ruth Ulmer. I feel I have known her thru the Church at Hepburn Baptist where I grew up. Always heard of the great ministry she was doing in Ky.
