Berea College had for many years the Great Commitments Program being built on the shoulders of giants such as John Greg Fee, Cassius Marcellius Clay, and JAR Rogers. Their work was not just a cause, an issue, or an ideal -- it was about the all-of-humankind. Martin's approach to life showed the best of Berea's belief in the fatherhood of God and the "family" of heaven's children. The length of his shadow ranks along with these saints because his smile and help were presented especially to those whose days would have dark without his books on wheels. Many preachers were hard paced to keep up with this retired Christian gentleman who knew that a book helped widen the window to the world and that a kind and wise word helped be aloes to the wounded souls. We will have to work harder at living in knowledge and love for those who didn't get the chance to know him.

Dear Hoffman family, I am so sorry for your loss. Your father was a very wonderful man who meant a lot to those who ever met him. He was loving and generous to many in the community and so nice to all those who used the Boyd County Library. Many years ago I spent the weekend in his home and found him to be a gracious host. You will all be in the prayers of my husband and me. Much love to you all.

Dear Hoffman Family, I want to offer my condolences to the family. I first met Martin and Louise as new members of Ashland FBC. Martin was instrumental in convincing me to attend FBC by his friendliness, kindness, and desire to get folks involved. Anyone who ever heard him pray knew he was a man of God that could touch the throne of grace. I'll miss him, his smile, his atention to details, and his firm hand shake. My prayers will be with you. Sincerly, Jim Smith

Georgia, Your father gave so much to community. He added joy to many, many readers by guiding them to books they enjoyed. First as a volunteer and then as an employee of the Boyd County Public Library, patrons always appreciated his vast knowledge of books. May many memories comfort you and yours. I hope he felt appreciated for he certainly was!
