Walter J. Miller, Sr.Walter J. Miller Sr. (1918-2009)

Walter J. Miller Sr., 90, of Ashland, Ky., died Wednesday morning, March 4, 2009, in Community Hospice Care Center.

He was born Oct. 16, 1918, in Webbville, Ky., a son of the late Ulric W. and Ruby Ellen Riffe Miller.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Edith Betty Prichard Miller; a brother, Charles J. Miller; a sister, Edna M. Davenport; and a grandson, Matthew Miller.

He was owner of Millers Meat Market in Catlettsburg, Ky. He was a member of Unity Baptist Church, where he was honored for 55 years of perfect Sunday school attendance. He was a member of American Legion Post 76 and the DAV of Carter County. He was a Kentucky colonel and a World War II Army veteran.

Surviving are a son, Walter Jim Miller Jr., and wife Diane of Moore, Okla.; daughters Pam Miller-Fitzpatrick and husband Rick of Columbus, Ohio, Vickie Shelton of Ashland, Ellen Kay Hogsett and husband Bob of Huntington, W.Va., Billie Kersey and husband David of Russell, Ky., Shirley Hendrickson of Deltona, Fla., and Cecelia Tackett of Flatwoods, Ky.; grandchildren David Kersey, Kris Ramsey, Paul Shelton, Jeff Shelton, Aimee Gulick, Patrick Miller, Alex Hogsett, Leigh Hogsett, Allison Davis, Roger Hendrickson and Beth Feldman; and 15 great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 7, 2009, at Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel in Ashland by Pastor Mike Rice and the Rev. Harold Cathey. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today, March 6, 2009, at the funeral home.

Contributions may be made to Community Hospice, 1538 Central Ave., Ashland, KY 41101.

Military services will be by American Legion Kenova Post 93.
