Oswin D. EyreOswin D. Eyre - 1917-2009

Oswin D. Eyre, 91, of Bellefonte, died March 12, 2009, in Kings Daughters Medical Center in Ashland.

He was born Oct. 20, 1917, in Superior, Neb., the son of the late John Ellis and Julia Mabelle Conn Eyre.

His wife of 60 years, Ida Eyre, passed away in 2003.

He retired in 1982 after 41 years of service from Armco Steel as the superintendent of energy services. He was of the Christian faith, a graduate of Superior High School in 1935 and attended Colorado A&M College for two years, graduating in 1941 from the University of Nebraska with a bachelors degree in mechanical engineering. He was a member of Chi Phi Fraternity and a former member of the Bellefonte Country Club. He was a World War II Army veteran who was on special assignment to White Sand Proving Grounds under Werner Von Braum.

He was also preceded in death by two brothers, John Eyre Jr. and Joseph L. Eyre; five sisters, Delma Barber, Frances Whitney, Florence Koontz, Rheva Robertson and Eunice Petersen; and a great-grandchild, Kaylee Dempsey.

Survivors include two daughters, Paula Eyre and husband Mark Dempsey of Charleston, W.Va., and Jane Eyre and husband Dr. Peter Jarosak of Greensboro, N.C.; four grandchildren, Sarah Jarosak of Burlington, N.C., David Jarosak of Greensboro, Pike Dempsey of South Charleston and Clay Dempsey of Charleston; and a very special furry friend, Sheba.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel in Ashland by Tom Swartzwelder. Entombment with military services will be in Ashland Cemetery Mausoleum.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to a local charity of choice.
