Effie Mae Charles, 79, of Ashland, Ky., died March 17, 2009, in Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital.

Mrs. Charles was born Sept. 22, 1929, in Boyd County, Ky., a daughter of the late James S. and Effie Lockwood Cordial.

In addition, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Mack Charles, in 2005; a son, William Eric Charles; a brother; and three sisters.

She was a retired deputy clerk in the Boyd County Clerks Office and a member of Centenary United Methodist Church, where she was active in Sunday school. She was a docent for the Kentucky Highlands Museum, a member of the Elks Womens Association and on the committee for her graduating class. She was a Kentucky colonel.

Surviving are a son, Chuck D. Charles and wife Jo of Ashland; a daughter, Kathy Lynn Charles Hampton and husband Ron of Catlettsburg, Ky.; sisters Sandless McBride of Cypress, Texas, and Ethel Dodson of Ashland; granddaughters Tiffany Charles Jobe and husband Casey of Ashland and Alexandria Lynn Wages of Catlettsburg; grandsons Seth Wages of Catlettsburg, David Charles of Chicago, Ill., Joel Dustin Charles of Morehead, Ky., Christopher Salisbury and wife Jenn of Louisa, Ky., and Henry Hampton of Catlettsburg; and great-grandchildren Delaney Sommer Jackson, Addison Leigh Jobe and Madison Salisbury.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday, March 20, 2009, at Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel in Ashland by the Rev. Troy Poff. Burial will be in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today, March 19, 2009, at the funeral home.

Friends may make contributions to the Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital Foundation, St. Christopher Drive, Ashland, KY 41101.

Chuck and Kathy, I was sadden to see the passing of your Mom.Growing up on Williams Ave we all knew everybodies folks. Eric and I were in the same class all thru school and my brother David Toler was 2 yrs ahead of us. I know you all will miss your Mom and I pray for peace and strength for you and the whole family.
