Lorraine Cummings Hill, 92, of Ashland, passed away on Thursday, July 9, 2009, in Woodland Oaks Health Care Facility after a long illness.

She was born April 24, 1917, in Charleston, W.Va., to the late Mary Elizabeth Molly Fitzwater and Lorenza Perry Lo Cummings. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Woodrow W. Hill, in 1982. Also preceding her in death are three brothers and their wives, Clark (Opal), Boyd (Ethel) and Buren (Tressa) Cummings; and five sisters and their husbands, Hallie (Ned) Atkinson, Goldie (Ernest) Surface, Madge (Bertrum) Young, Velma (Porter) Teel and Juanita (Hubert) Davis.

She is survived by her devoted son and daughter and their spouses, Stephen and Mary Hill and Tonya and Mike Martino of Ashland; five granddaughters, Jenna and Deanna Hill of Ashland, Shannon Hatcher (Ben) Kneisley of Jacksonville, Fla., Stacy Hatcher (Jason) Doss of Indianapolis, Ind., and Sarah Hatcher of Ashland; and many loving nieces and nephews and their families.

Lorraine worked on the Manhattan Project (atomic bomb) in Oak Ridge, Tenn., during World War II. She was a member of Unity Baptist Church, the Kings Daughters Hospital Auxiliary and the Ashland Civic League. She was a Kentucky colonel and a graduate of the Charleston School of Commerce.

Her children would like to thank the staffs of Woodland Oaks, Morning Pointe, Kings Daughters Home and Hospice for all the tireless hours they spent taking excellent care of our mother over the past seven years. Thanks to Dr. Michele Bagley for being our mothers doctor and a great family friend.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday, July 12. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday, July 13 at Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel by the Rev. Harold Cathey. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park in Ashland.

My Aunt Lorraine was a wonderful person. She was like a 2nd mother to me and my sister, Trena. We have many wonderful memories of her and our many family vacations/outings together. May she RIP.

I had the pleasure of meeting Mrs. Hill who was always faithful in attending the Rose Hill services at King's Daughters & Sons and Woodland Oaks. She was so pleasant to talk with and always had a sweet smile. We will miss her. My prayers are with you.
