William R. Shockey

William R. Billy Ray Shockey - 1931-2009

William R. Billy Ray Shockey, 77, of Grayson died Friday, Aug. 21, 2009, at his home in Grayson. He was born Nov. 29, 1931, in Jenkins, the son of the late Lake Erie and O.W. Shockey. He was a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church in Russell; the Elks BPOE 350; The Grand Lodge of Kentucky F&AM 325; The American Legion Post 76; and was a former member of the El Hasa Shrine. He was retired from Disney World in Orlando and worked many years at the Ashland Original Market. He served in the U.S. Army from 1949 to 1952 in the Korean Conflict where he was awarded numerous medals including the Purple Heart.

He also was preceded in death by a brother, Oliver Wendell Sonny Shockey; and a sister, Doris Kitty Elliott.

Survivors include his children, Wendell Crawford Shockey, Paul Frederick Shockey, Lesa Marie McDowell, all of Ashland; their mother, Edna Lew Mansfield of Ashland; three sisters, Betty Lovin, Ann (John) Sturgill and Louise Points, all of Ashland; one grandson and his wife, Christopher Michael and Jackie McDowell; three great-grandchildren, Vista, Justin and Joe; many nieces and nephews; special friends, Zulus and Wilma Prince and family; and all his buddies out on the farm.

Funeral will be at noon Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2009, at Steen Funeral Home-13th Street Chapel in Ashland, with Pastor Norman Staker of the Bethel Lutheran Church in Russell. Burial will be in Ashland Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, with a Masonic service at 7 p.m.

Friends may make contributions to the Shriners Hospitals for Children, 1900 Richmond Road, Lexington, Ky. 40502.

Crawford, I was very sorry to hear of your father's death. I know he will be missed very much. I don't know if you remember me or not, but I worked for your Grandfather for 6 years back in the 60's. You painted a picture for me. It was a winter scene done in blues. I still have it and through the years I have gotten many compliments on it. I liked your Dad very much. He was a really nice person as I am sure you know. I learned a lot about life and business while working there. I will keep you and your family in my prayers and pray that God will ease yoour grief. I first met Bill in the mid 50,s; we became friends. I lost track of him several years ago; am saddened at his passing. My prayers are with his family at this time. May God Bless....
