Ginger L. DowellGinger L. "Jimmie" Dowell - 1924-2009

Ginger L. "Jimmie" Dowell, 85, of Ashland, Ky., died Tuesday afternoon, Nov. 10, 2009, in Community Hospice Care Center.

He was born May 20, 1924, in Big Springs, Ky., a son of the late Lorenzo Burnas and Lula Woods Dowell.

His wife, Betty June Osburn Dowell, died in 2005.

He was a retired machinist with National Mine Service Co. and a World War II Army veteran who received the Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Ribbon, WWII Victory Medal and European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with three Bronze Stars.

Surviving are sons Robert Louis (Debbie) Dowell of Ashland and Gary Michael Dowell of St. Louis, Mo.; daughters Cheryl (Garry) Lewis of Ashland, Gaye Lynn (Michael) Phillips of Ashland, Ida Lu Anne (Mark) Hermansdorfer of Indialantic, Fla., and Sue Ellen (Jeff) Adams of Ashland; a brother, Elra (Jean) Dowell of Elizabethtown, Ky.; a sister, Louise (Bill) Hanson of Washington State; grandchildren Jim Lewis, Angela Lewis, Joe Dowell, Matt McDowell, Deanna Lambert, Christina Dowell, Ian Dowell, Heather Robinson, John Adams, Derrick Hermansdorfer, Ginger Adams and Keelyn Hermansdorfer;and eight great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 13, 2009, at Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel in Ashland by Pastor Randy Osburn. Entombment will be in Ashland Cemetery Mausoleum.

Four grandsons will serve as pallbearers along with a great-grandson, Anthony Hall, and his stepfather, Eric Lambert.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. today, Nov. 12, 2009, at the funeral home.

Friends may make contributions to Community Hospice, 1538 Central Ave., Ashland, KY 41101.

Military services will be conducted by American Legion Kenova Post 93.

Robbie, Gary, Cheryl, Gaye Lynn, Annie & Sue Ellen, I am still trying, but doesn't look like we are going to make it down for Uncle Jim's funeral. I have spent most of the time since Annie wrote me, remembering all the good times we had together at the family picnics. Please know that if we don't get there, all of you are in our prayers. Good morning, A family member posted Jimmie's obituary in their facebook status. I just want to say that I am touched by his life. I am praying for your family and am saddened by his loss. A special thank you goes out to Jimmie for his service and being an all American hero to so many. God Bless you all!
