My heartfelt sympathy goes to Dan Daniels family for their loss. In the fall of 1973, my senior year as a Business major, Dan talked me into taking his English Novel class. You can handle it, we will read a few books and have some fun, he said. In a class of English majors he gave his best effort to help me fit in, possibly an early experiment of inter-relatedness of all disciplines. Our reward was from him, and hand typed, and I have kept it all of these years:
A SORT OF POEM / GIFT
FOR ENGLISH NOVEL
Only words:
Starving starlets perched
at ragged intervals
On the taut
Slender wire of time.
Snowy silence:
Holes in space mark
Our former place with
Only a drifting feather
(Sentimental exclamation point ! )
To the crease between was and is.
And will be waits
For spring thawed by:
Only words

Miss Rachel, my name is Monty Lewis....I Graduated from Southwestern in 1986...your Daddy had a great deal of influence on me....I had him for FR-Comp(Writ)...I failed his course twice before 'I got the message'...Dan pushed me to understand that just because I was a Football player, that didn't mean that he was going to 'slide' me through class - 'this is College not High School, Monty' is what he told me...he never raised his voice, he didn't have to with 'those eyes'....Miss Rachel, I returned to Southwestern in 1993 as Head Football Coach and Dan was still there teaching, I enjoyed a very different relationship with him at that time....we won a lot of Football games and Championships from 93 -2001 and I enjoyed using what your Daddy taught me with other young people while at SC....I've been the Head Football Coach here at Friends University since 2003 and I still use a lot of what Dan taught me too this day....I cared deeply for your Daddy and I loved him very much and I know that he loved you Miss Rachel....Sincerly Monty Lewis 316-295-5619

I am very saddened to hear of Dan's death. He and I had the same dislike of Kansas winters and the one quote from him that I will never forget was "I don't think snow is pretty, even on a postcard!" He was a joy to work with as his office assistant at SWC, and he will be missed by all.

I just heard about Danny's passing. We grew up in the same South Ashland neighborhood and Danny and Marsha in particular were certainly a significant part of our neighborhood group. It sounds like he had a most productive, generous and interesting life. While I haven't seen Danny since we got out of high school, I often think of the old neighborhood group and wonder where they are and what they have accomplished. Obviously Danny made the most of his opportunities. Condolences to the family.

It is so sad to hear of your death. I was one of your students back in the 70's. But I have heard from class mates I haven't heard from in decades. Your death has brought us close again. I guess that speaks volumes about the impact you had on our world.

I just learned of Dan's passing. I had the great good fortune of working at Southwestern & knowing Dr. Dan. His wit, wisdom and amazing eloquence with words is something I will always treasure about this man. On his travels a few years back Dan was in Columbia and my daughter & I met him for breakfast. What a wonderful catching up we had. Grateful for knowing him. Heartfelt sympathies to Rachel & family.
RIP, Dan.

Dan's death has left a huge hole in our hearts. There still was so much to do, to see and to talk about with him. He was a complex thinker who loved simple pleasures and that is one of the many things that I will miss about him. The last time we visited him in September he expressed how humbled he was by Rachel and Lorrie's loving and generous spirit. I certainly saw that today at the service--there was a lot of love in every detail. Rachel, Lorrie & Joshua, Marshall, Marsha & Don, Steve & Sally, and Kathy & Bob--our thoughts and prayers continue to be with you during this difficult time.

I was saddened to hear of Dr. Daniel's passing. He was one of my favorite Southwestern College professors, and my decision to become an English teacher was, in part, due to his influence.
What can I say, that Dan wouldn't mark as "purple prose"? :) I'll just say that I will remember the twinkle in his eye, his giggle, and his ability to draw out the best in his students. I'm grateful to have known him.
My prayers are with your family, as I imagine that it must be especially difficult to lose Dan during the holidays. May God's comfort be yours.
Sincerely,

I learned yesterday of Dan's passing and my heart aches for what we have lost. I was a young Kansas girl when I first felt his presence in Western Culture class with Dr. Wilgers in 1975. I knew the moment his gentle presence first graced the class that my soul would be richer for this man. I will miss him greatly. We corresponded over the years in a lovely medium called letters. I loved his hand, his voice that came through the written word and melted pretense so that our longing for beauty and that which was real could be touched. I feel blessed that we talked over the phone last year. I had hoped to see him soon, I was waiting for that cursed tomorrow. I wish I could be with those that loved him that gather now. I mourn for him and send love to you. I loved him too.

It is with great sadness that I learned about Dans death. As a colleague and friend he greatly impacted both my professional and personal life. Through several Jan terms we conducted together, I came to value his exceptional intellect and openness to a multifaceted, interconnected world. Along with former colleagues and many students including my own daughters, I mourn the loss, but will continue to treasure many fond memories of our student tours to Tunisia, Europe, and Ecuador. I extend my heartfelt sympathy to Dans family, especially to Rachel and Cathy. May you find comfort and solace in precious memories. Fondly, Marguerite Hessini

My world stopped the other day when I heard of Dan's passing. Dan was a colleague of mine in the English department at SC between 2001 and 2006. His office was a few feet from mine, and he, Michelle, and I would shout back and forth, engaging in literary and hairsplitting conversations, such as the etymology of the word "tallywhacker." I taught Shakespeare with Dan and was blown away by the grace and elegance with which he could perform a close reading. He made me a better teacher by his example. He was also a bit of a subersive, but that's another story. What I will remember most about Dan is that he was a gentle lover of beauty, an aesthete, an epicurean in every sense of the term. To me, he often seemed too delicate for the crudities of our modern world. But his wisdom allowed him to thrive. May he rest in the place of beauty, poetry, and song that his heart adored.
Even though I never met you Rachel, I often heard Dan speak of you with the fondness of a parent. My prayers are with you and your family.

Dear Kathy and Rachel, I shall miss
Dan more than I can say, more even
than I now feel. Not only has he been my oldest continuing friend, in many ways he also became my soul-mentor: a man of wit and humor, decency and goodness, whose
elegant capacity for seeing into the deeper truth of things always
exceeded my own. He taught me so
many things, without realizing it and without taking credit for it,
embodying in his own example the lessons of a lifetime: a loverlike
respect for new ways of seeing and
knowing, a tender curiosity about
other places and other cultures, a
humble yet vigorous appreciation for all things rare, spare, and homespun. In all these efforts he
magnificently resisted the teacher's perennial (and fatal) temptation to overshadow his subject with his own ego rather than let his subject burst forth in
full illumination.
Rest in peace, my good and generous
friend. My life will be a darker and smaller place without you.

I am saddened by Dan's death--it's a loss for all of us whom he has profoundly touched. When I think back to the times when Dan made a difference in my life, I realize that he has truly enlightened many of us. Who would have ever thought that the Natural Sciences Division at Southwestern would have become one of the strongest supporters of the liberal arts at our College. I attribute it to Dan and the manner in which his patience and encouragement brought out the best in all of us. When I think of the true meaning of liberal arts, I think of Dan Daniel. His spirit continues to live on in many elements of our curriculum.

It was Albert Camus who said, "In the depth of winter, I finally learned that there was within me an invincible summer." Although the cold and winter was Dan's least favorite climate, he adored Christmastime and often played Christmas music year round. And even in the midst of winter, Dan's spirit was that of warm sunshine. His compassion, sensitivity, and brilliance have always been remarkable and unlike any other human being I've known. I'm so sorry my plans to attend the funeral have not worked out. To Marshall, Marsha, Steve and Rachel - feel God's arms around you during this time. We will all miss Dan.

I was a student of Dan's in the early 1970s at Southwestern. Dan was a great teacher for me - I describe him as the person who taught me to read. (Taught me to read, perhaps, but didn't cure me of dashes.)
Few were as tolerant of my early 20s, pushed me as deliberately to improve, and kept constant suggestions coming for new ways to think. He took on at least three independent studies for me during my time at SC; extra work for him and a huge benefit to me for the individual attention.
We remained in irregular contact over the years until just before his sudden retirement. I do and will miss his gentle humor and generous spirit.
My heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.
I have found a few photos from the 1980s, and will dig deeper later this week. I'll post any here as I find them.

It is often difficult to use words to express the profound impact another person has had on your life, especially if that person taught you how to use words. As a professor, Dr. Daniel gave me tools and advice I use daily in my work -- things like how to write decisively and read thoughtfully. But more important than the words he used and taught us about, he exhibited an insatiable curiosity for the world around him and sincere care for those in it. Those two things were clearly evident from the moment anyone came in contact with Dan, and are possibly the most important things a professor can impart to a student. I am thankful simply to have known him, but profoundly grateful to have learned from him.
To his family: you are in our thoughts and prayers. Thank you for sharing him with us.

Dan spent much of his life searching for words, pictures, metaphors, and illustrations to capture the magical, beautiful, and profound. Along the way, he shared with all of us a sense of wonder, intensity, amazement, and creativity. Very few weeks pass that I don't recall lessons learned from this sensitive friend and colleague. Just last week I remembered learning such important lessons from Dan on forgiveness and collegiality. Dan also invested deeply in several of my children, as he did with so many other SC students. His was a life of commitment to others in profound ways. His legacy will impact generations to come. I am so thankful to have known him.

There are no words that could ever fully express what this man meant to me. At Southwestern, he was my teacher, my colleague, and my friend. We laughed together, proofed each others work, and we discussed the merits of Shakespeare both inside and outside of the coffeehouse. I only hope his spirit catches the wind, touches every blade of grass on the way to someplace gorgeous and new and lives on. What an inspiration...

Farewell, Dan ---- Poet, Teacher, and Friend
Dan was relatively new on the Southwestern College faculty when I arrived as a freshman. Even then, he was one of my most memorable teachers.
I took a January term creative writing course with Dan and with Troy Boucher which will remain one of the highlights of my educational experience. I will never forget Dan's encouragement and his exhortation to all of us to do our very best and always to strive for excellence, in our lives as in our writing.
I visited with him on many occasions visiting Winfield as an alum and was always delighted to see him. I'm sure my various career paths left him shaking his head when he knew I should be writing poetry. Someday I will again.
In any case, part of the poetry in my heart will always belong to him. God's blessings and peace on all of his extended family.

My husband Terry (who teaches chemistry at Southwestern College)and I were honored to know Dan during the time we've spent here in Kansas. We've spent time with him both socially and professionally. I work in the library and would see him several times a week when he would bring his classes to the library. He has been missed since his retirement and will be missed even more profoundly now. We had always hoped that we would encounter him at Bluegrass again. I know that he will still be there in spirit. Terry and I offer our sincere condolences to his family.

As a colleague and friend of Dan's since 1970, it was sad to learn that he had passed away. We shared an office at Southwestern for many years and in that time shared many stories, teaching experiences, and much coffee. Dan will be missed. I offer my heart felt sympathy to Dan's family, to Steve, Marsha, Marshall and especially to Rachel. Our thoughts are with you.

Dan was a great gentleman. His constant curiosity and love of learning were matched by his gentle style of teaching and mentoring. The world is a better place because of the multitudes he inspired. We will miss him.

We were students at Southwestern College, graduating in 1975. We admired Dan very much. He was a loved professor, and dear friend. He offered much advice and support even in the many years since we have been in school. We are very sorry to see such a wonderful man gone from us.
