Alice Joyce WilliamsAlice Joyce Williams (1930-2009)

Alice Joyce Williams, cherished wife and beloved mother, passed away Dec. 18, 2009. Joyce was born Dec. 1, 1930 in Lynch, Ky. to Squire Franklin Nelson and Suda Delph Nelson. She graduated from Ashland High School, attended Virginia Intermont College and graduated from the University of Kentucky. She was married to Alfred J. Williams for 57 years, and in that time she blossomed into a skilled gardener and a truly gifted artist. She was a member of Unity Baptist Church.

Mrs. Williams was nationally recognized for her watercolors. She received over 145 awards, including Gold Metals from American Watercolor Society, Guild of Boston Artists and Knickerbocker Artists, New York. She has 32 solo exhibitions and sat on the board of directors of the American Watercolor Society, eventually achieving lifetime member status. Her work is included in private, corporate and museum collections throughout the country and she is listed in the Who's Who in American Art and American Women in the Arts. She shared this great talent through instruction and in 2007 donated a generous portion of her collection to the Kentucky Highlands Museum in Ashland, Ky.

Mrs. Williams is survived by her husband Alfred; her two sons, Steven Alfred and Michael Franklin and their wives; five grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Nelson.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2009, at Steen Funeral Home Central Avenue Chapel by Reverend Charles E. Stewart.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Friends may make contributions to the Alzheimers Association Lexington/Bluegrass Chapter, 836 Euclid Avenue, Lexington, KY 40502.

Al, our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Joyce was a very special person with a monumental talent. Like my Dad and Harpy's Mom, she's whole again and able to smile that lovely smile. God bless you and your sons and families.
