Patricia JusticePatricia Patty Houchen Johnson Justice (1938-2009)

Patricia Patty Houchen Johnson Justice, passed away in Community Hospice Care Center on Sunday, Dec. 20, 2009.

She was born Jan. 8, 1938, in Austin, Ind., to Cecil and Louise Houchen, who preceded her in death.

She is survived by her husband, Oren Justice, M.D.; a brother, Terry (Runell) Houchen of Glasgow, Ky.; her children, Sherri (Donald) Johnson Kelly, Bryan (Maria) Johnson, J. Wesley (Karin) Johnson II, DVM and Elaine (Steve) Corbitt and her beloved grandchildren, Madeline, Kacie, Stephen, Alexandra, Taylor, Lily, Grace, Leighton and Anna Caryl. Also surviving are her stepsons, Daniel (Tona) Justice and Allen (Amy) Justice and the father of her children, J. Wesley (Phyllis) Johnson, M.D.; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Patty loved life. She was a registered nurse graduating from the Baptist Hospital School of Nursing in Louisville, Ky. She was adventurous as she was petite. She rode in a hot air balloon and went soaring in Arizona, sailed in the Caribbean, snow skied in the Rockies and drove the roads of Ireland, Scotland and England. She sang soprano and played saxophone. But most of all, she loved her family and her community. She was scout leader, PTA president, coach, Sunday School teacher and taxi driver extraordinaire. She was instrumental in the opening and operations of the Community Kitchen and the Shelter of Hope. She volunteered at Kings Daughters Medical Center and taught preschool at Ashland Child Development Center. In her final days, she ensured winter clothes were purchased for children and families had gifts for Christmas.

All services will be at First Christian Church, 1930 Winchester Ave., Ashland where she was a faithful member.

Visitation is from 4 to 7 p.m. today, Dec. 22, and the funeral service is at noon Wednesday, Dec. 23. She will lie in state at the church from 11 a.m. until service time. The service will be officiated by the Rev. Ike Nicholson. Graveside services will follow in Ashland Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) Organ Fund, the Community Kitchen, Shelter of Hope, Community Hospice or any favorite charity.

Steen Funeral Home in Ashland is in charge of arrangements.

So sorry to hear of the death of Patty Houchen ( to me) We were class mates at KBH. I cut patty's hair while we were in school for $.25-$.50. Those were the days. I always liked Patty, who was kind and pleasant to all she met.
