O.D., the son of Orville Riley Sr. and Eva May Ruggles Riley, was born in Coal Grove, Ohio, on Aug. 29, 1925.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Maxie Riley, in May 2008 and a sister, Thelma Meadows.

He is survived by his son, Clarence Ray Riley and his wife, Darlene, of Ashland; grandchildren Michael Riley and his wife, Evelyn, of Ironton, Christopher Riley and his wife, Karen, of Ashland, Matthew Riley and his wife, Sabrina, of Williamsburg, Va., Brian Bass-Riley and his wife, Lori, of Fairhaven, N.J., and Kimberly Sansom of Ashland; and nine great-grandchildren.

He then served as business director of the State Convention of Baptists in Ohio from 1991 to 1994 in Columbus. In 1998, he and Maxie moved back to Kentucky and settled in Morehead to enjoy his favorite things, his family, golf and fishing. He was of the Baptist faith, witnessed to countless people and was very active in the churches as Sunday school teacher and director, outreach director and trustee and chaired many committees as a member in Ashland, Lexington, Columbus, Ohio, and Clearfield Baptist Church in Morehead, where his membership remains.

Clarence & family, We share your sorrow over the loss of your dad and pray for all of you. We have missed him and Maxie so much here in Morehead. It's unbelieveable how many friends they made here in the few years they were here. Everywhere I go someone asks about them. I still see special friends they had at the clinics, grocery, beauty salon, church, & restaurants. They were like parents to me & my family. We're blessed to know they are together with the Lord & as O.D. told Maxie, "when we get to heaven, we'll be together forever & ever". They were still sweethearts & wonderful examples to all of us how couples should love each other. I'm happy he got to spend Christmas with Maxie & Jesus. As you said, she was probably waiting with arms wide open, saying, "what took you so long?" Yes, they are where they wanted to be--praising the Lord with "Bless the Lord, O my soul, Bless His holy name"--from his favorite verse. Helen

Clarence Ray and family, O.D. Riley was one of the best friends and fellow workers I have ever known. Peggy and I were blessed by his love for the Lord and his fun loving spirit. Some of the best days at the office were when he said to me, "can you join me for golf this afternoon"? He and Maxie made a difference at Sharon Woods Church. I enjoyed working with them as interim pastor at their church. Our prayers are with you.

we are so sorry for your loss, really enjoyed knowing maxie and her apple pies and o.d and his great since of humor. Od would steal tomatoes off our table outside but also tell you about coming by and taking them, but we gave him permission to take all he wanted, so i wouldnt call that stealing at all, but he did. just so he could joke about it. he sure was one of a kind. we plan on meeting him in Heaven one day.

Clarence Ray & Family, We just heard about O.D.'s passing late this evening. Our hearts break with you. O.D. was a class act. We are sorry we did not make it to visitation. God gave us the best when he gave O.D. and Maxie to us as neighbors. They made us a part of their Morehead family and they were our adopted grandparents too. There has been an empty place in our community and hearts since they left Morehead. The memories made with them are some of our dearest. We always tried to be there for each other. They were the first to call and bring food when I lost my sister and mother. What a legacy they left for you and what a testimony to the grace of God. You all are in our thoughts and prayers. We considered O.D. a gentle giant. With Deepest Sympathy, Randy & Lynda

Dear Clarence and Family: I know your family loved and appreciated O.D and Maxie; we in Ohio loved both of them so much. I was serving as a Director of Missions when O.D. was the Business Manager for the State Convention of Baptists in Ohio. One of his tasks was to make the decisions for the leased cars for more than 40 of the SCBO workers. One year he recommended the Diesel Oldsmobile - 4 door sedan. He explained that this was the "absolute best car available and all of us would love them." Also, he said they would be so economical being a diesel. We loved ours and bought one when the leased expired. However, he forgot to explain that service stations that sold diesel fuel were few and far between. So, we had to go to the truck stops - - pulling up beside 18 wheeler tractor / trailers. The diesel fuel was oily. Pumps were dirty. Had to stand-in-line with truckers to make payments. Word some came back to O.D. that several did not like these arrangements. Two years later, the leases were expiring. He introduced the Oldsmobile 4-door sedan that ran on gasoline. "Those diesels were terrible, dirty, lost their value, but these new Oldsmobiles are perfect." He was a real salesman ! We had such fun with him as he described other purchases for the SCBO. Both of them were faithful member of the Sharon Woods Baptist Church. Jeanette and I loved and appreciated both of them. We were blessed that God brought both of them to serve with us and us with them. Merry Christmas Jeanette and Don Gillis, Director of Missions, Retired, Southwestern and Miami Valley Baptist Associations, Hamilton, Ohio. DonaldWGillis@fuse.net
