1925 - 2010

David Jay Stender (1925-2010)

David Jay Stender died on Jan. 4, 2010.

He was born in Huntington, W.Va., on Aug. 27, 1925, formerly of Woodbury, Minn., son of the late Edward and Ethel Scaggs Stender. He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Patricia Jean Pratt.

Surviving are two daughters, Jean Sims and husband Donald and Kelley Stender; two grandchildren, Michael Sroga and Amanda Sims-Wolf and husband Robert J.; two great-grandchildren, Cameron Sims and Alex Wolf; a close relative, Marie Peg Stender; and a special friend, Carol Vadnais.

As a sixth-grader at Harveytown Elementary School, his favorite Bible verse was the 23rd Psalm and he was influenced by his teacher, Mr. Dawson. He was a Huntington High School athlete.

David served in the Navy two years during World War II. He was a proud graduate of Marshall University and played minor league baseball in which he pitched several no-hit games.

After graduation, he was a longtime employee of Ashland Oil, where he had a moving and working career. He lived in Pennsylvania, Illinois, Ohio, Kentucky and Minnesota and returned to Ashland as a vice president of trading. During retirement, he enjoyed Bible study, studying master gardening, delivering Meals on Wheels, playing cards at Ashland Elks Lodge 350, traveling on cruises and Florida trips.

He had several pine trees planted near the Ashland Central Park fountain as a living legacy to his family. His investment advice, entertaining stories and quick wit will be sorely missed.

Memorials are preferred in lieu of flowers to the American Heart Association, American Cancer Society or Disabled American Veterans.

The funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 8, 2010, at Steen Funeral Home-13th Street Chapel in Ashland with Father John Noe officiating and a eulogy by Jim Fout. Entombment will be in Rose Hill Burial Park Mausoleum.

Visitation will be after 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Kelley and Jean, So sorry to learn of your Fathers's death. I was his neighbor across the street. He was a very special person that will be sadly missed by everyone who knew him. I always enjoyed visiting with your parents. They both hold a special place in my heart.
