
Gregory Scott Salyer (1950-2010)
Gregory Scott Salyer, age 59, of Ashland, Ky., died Thursday evening, April 1, 2010, in Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital.
He was born May 15, 1950, in Ashland, a son of the late Claude B. "Buddy" Salyer and Doris Wahneitta "Nita" Scott Salyer. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Phillip Alan Salyer in 2009.
He was owner and operator of Home Management Services for 23 years. He was a member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), a 1968 graduate of Paul G. Blazer High School, where he played varsity basketball and attended Ashland Community College and the University of Kentucky.
He was the first recipient of the Joe Franklin Memorial Scholarship and an avid Tomcat fan. He served as president of American Little League, president of Junior Football League and it was through his efforts that the first night Little League game in Ashland was played. Along with his brothers, Greg helped build the Ashland Tomcat Baseball Field in memory of their father.
More than anything, he will be remembered as being a loving husband, father, brother, "Big Daddy" to his grandchildren and "Huggie Bear" to his friends.
He is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Cheryl Mims Salyer of Ashland; sons, Wesley Alan Salyer of Mobile, Ala., and Chadwick Scott (Jonda) Salyer of Pikeville, Ky.; a brother, Brian Wesley (Sherry) Salyer of Ashland; two grandchildren, Austin Gregory Salyer and Anna Marie Salyer; a niece, Kelly Jo Hoormann of Nashville, Tenn.; nephews, Bradley Scott Salyer of Louisville, Ky., and Ryne Alan Salyer of Dayton, Ohio; and father and mother-in-law, Gene and Teen Mims of Cincinnati, Ohio.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 6, 2010, at Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel in Ashland by the Rev. Gary Arrington. Burial will follow in Ashland Cemetery.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 5, 2010 at the funeral home.
