Eva Louise Price HoyEva Louise Price Hoy - 1920-2010

Eva Louise Price Hoy, 89, of Ashland, died Sunday evening, July 4, 2010, in Kings Daughters Medical Center from a heart attack brought on by a recent illness. She had been residing at Woodland Oaks Health Care Facility, receiving physical therapy for a recent fall in which she fractured her shoulder and wrist.

She was born Nov. 11, 1920, in Beckley, W.Va., the daughter of C.C. and Eva O. Price. She was the beloved wife of William E. Hoy, M.D., who practiced in Ashland from 1952 until his death in 2000.

She was secretary-treasurer of Rose Hill Burial Park until it was sold in 1997 and current secretary treasurer of CC Price Land Co. in Ashland.

Dr. Hoy was a graduate of Duke University in Durham, N.C., where she was valedictorian of her class, and received her Ph.D. in classical studies at Bryn Mawr College, Bryn Mawr, Pa.; her doctoral dissertation completed in 1952 under the direction of renowned classics scholar Dr. Lily Ross Taylor, was titled Political Influence in Roman Prosecutions, 75 B.C. to 60 B.C. with a listing of the trials.

Dr. Hoy was a professor and chairperson of the classical studies department at Marshall University in Huntington until her retirement.

Surviving are three children, Elizabeth Hoy Kaufmann of Marietta, Ga., Charles Hoy of Dublin, Ohio, and John Hoy of Ashland; two grandchildren, Zachary and Tyler Kaufmann of Marietta; a sister, Jo P. Dye of Lebanon, Ohio; nieces Nan Johnson of Lebanon and Sarah L. Dye of Elgin, Ill.; and her sister-in-law, Camilla Hoy of Greensboro, N.C.

She was also preceded in death by a brother, John O. Price.

Dr. Hoy belonged to First Presbyterian Church of Ashland; the American Association of University Women; the Daughters of the American Revolution, Kentucky chapter; the American Philological Association; the John Marshall Society and formerly the Classical Association of the Middle West and South (CAMWS). Her interest in promoting the teaching of Latin and Greek in American schools through organizations like the CAMWS was what prompted her to encourage Centre College of Kentucky in Danville to establish a Latin and Greek curriculum at the college.

No visitation is planned. Private services will be Thursday, July 8, 2010, at Rose Hill Burial Park.

Dear Family, Dr Hoy was my Latin teacher at Marshall in the late 1970s. She was an excellent teacher and very fine person. We are very sorry to hear of her passing. We will be praying for you.
