Leslie Marshall Daniel, 94, a longtime resident of Ashland, died Oct. 24, 2010, in Street, Md.

He was born April 9, 1916, in Ashland, a son of the late Arby and Etta Mae Daniel. He was predeceased by his wife, Ruth Murray Daniel ("the love of his life), and his eldest child, Dan Daniel.

Mr. Daniel was a longtime member, deacon and trustee of 39th Street Baptist Church in Ashland.

He grew up in Johnson County, Ky., and was a teacher in the Johnson County schools. He attended Pikeville College and Morehead State University. A 35-year employee of The Independent in Ashland, Mr. Daniel retired in 1981 as an advertising manager.

He enjoyed many activities during his retirement: making white oak baskets, painting, writing poetry, playing the banjo and guitar, teaching English as a second language to adults, gardening, and playing Scrabble with his family and friends. He was active in the Ashland and Catlettsburg senior centers.

Mr. Daniel is survived by his daughter, Marsha Ann Muir and her husband, Don of Bel Air, Md.; his son, Steve Daniel and his wife, Sally of Virginia Beach, Va.; two granddaughters, Rachel Green and Dawn Frost; two grandsons, Chris Daniel and Brian Daniel; and one great-grandson, Joshua Green.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 29, 2010 at 39th Street Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens in Ashland.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 28, 2010 at Steen Funeral Home-13th Street Chapel in Ashland.

Friends may make contributions to the 39th Street Baptist Church, 732 39th St., Ashland, KY 41101, or to the Ashland Senior Center, 324 15th St., Ashland, KY 41101.
