Philip James Winn IV, M.D., 91, of Ashland, died Monday, April 18, 2011 in Community Hospice Care Center after a long illness.

Jim Winn was born in Red Jacket, W.Va., on June 10, 1919, the son of the late Philip James and Chloe Belle Browning Winn of Virginia. He was married to Elizabeth Anne (Hill) Winn for more than 65 years. He was preceded in death by his sister, Virginia Winn Gooch and brother-in-law, Robert Gooch of Troy, Va.

He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Robert Bud H. Winn and Sarah Winn of Charlottesville, Va. He is survived by his sister, Mary Louise Winn McCutcheon, wife of the late William Benson McCutcheon, M.D. of Durham, N.C. His brother-in-law, Dr. Marvin H. Dill, husband of the late Nancy Susan Hill Dill, resides in Huntington, W.Va.

After graduating from Marshall College, Dr. Winn attended Officers' Candidate School in NYC, graduating in June, 1941 as an ensign in the U.S. Navy. He served in WWII from March 1941 until March 1946 attaining the rank of lieutenant commander, serving on the USS Maury, USS Aulick and USS Higbee, all destroyers in the Pacific. He received the Presidential Unit Citation for involvement in 11 naval engagements in the South Pacific.

Following his discharge from service, Dr. Winn received his degree from Marshall College and entered the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond (now VA Commonwealth University) in September 1946, graduating in June 1950. He completed an internship at St. Marys Hospital in Huntington, W.Va., and established a family practice in Ashland and was on the staff of King's Daughters Hospital.

He was a member of the Boyd County Medical Association, the Kentucky Medical Association and The American Academy of Family Physicians for 50 years. Dr. Winn was a Master Mason and member of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry and Shriners International for 50 years.

Dr. Winn retired from practice in 1989 and is survived by his five grown children, Sandra Anne Wilbun (and son-in-law, Gerald D. Wilbun) of Appomattox, Va., Philip James Winn V (and daughter-in-law, Dr. Colette Winn) of Chesterfield, Mo., Barbara Jane Winn Lientz (and son-in-law, John G. Lientz) of Savannah, Ga., Ellen Elizabeth Winn of Devon, Pa., and Timothy Stephen Winn (and daughter-in-law, Donna Winn) of Lexington.

Dr. Winn is survived by eight grandchildren, Matthew T. Wilbun, David C. Wilbun and Elizabeth Betsy Wilbun Ranson (Mrs. J.D. Ranson) of Appomattox, Elizabeth Anne Lientz Macfadyen (Mrs. Simon Macfadyen) of London, England, James Richard Lientz of Savannah, John Andrew Dobbins of Brooklyn, N.Y., Matthew Winn Dobbins of Arlington, Va., and Sarah Katherine Winn of Lexington.

Dr. Winn is also survived by five great-granddaughters.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 18th and Carter Ave., Ashland, KY 41102, Community Hospice, 1538 Central Ave., Ashland, KY 41101 or The Shriners Hospital for Children, 1900 Richmond Road, Lexington, KY 40502.

Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. Thursday followed by the funeral service at 2 p.m. at Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel in Ashland officiated by the Rev. John Street and Chaplain Jimm Smedley. Interment will follow the service at Ridgelawn Cemetery in Barboursville, W.Va.
