Jesse H. "Buck" Hicks 87, of Ashland, died Wednesday morning July 20, 2011 at Cornerstone Hospital in Huntington, West Virginia.
He was born November 22, 1923 in Ashland, Kentucky, a son of the late Taylor and Sara Withrow Hicks. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two sisters, Katheryn Stiff and Madlyn Stewart, and two brothers, Joe F. Hicks and Walter V. Hicks.
Jesse graduated from Ashland Senior High School with the class of 1942, and then served with the 970th Army Corps of Engineers for three years during World War II. For his service, he was awarded several medals, including 4 Bronze Stars and the French Liberation Medal. He retired in 1985 as Assistant Manager of the Zone Accounting Bureau of CSX in Huntington, West Virginia, after 42 years of service.
He was an active member of Centenary United Methodist Church until his recent illness. Over the years he served in many official positions at Centenary, including Chairman of the Administrative Board, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, and Financial Secretary.
Survivors include his loving wife of 63 years, Erma "Peg" Stidham Hicks of Ashland; one son, Walter J. Hicks and his wife, Christina; three grandsons, Taylor H. Hicks, Patrick V. Hicks and William J. Hicks all of Clinton, Iowa; three sister in laws, Lucille S. Henry of Ashland, Helen S. Bartkowiak of Midland, North Carolina and Erma D. Stidham of Erlanger, Kentucky, also surviving are many Nieces and Nephews whom he loved deeply.
Funeral Services will be at 11:00 A.M., on Saturday, July 23, 2011 at Steen Funeral Home Central Avenue Chapel with the Reverend Troy Poff officiating. Burial will follow in the family cemetery at Summit, Kentucky.
Friends may call from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Friday, July 22, 2011 at Steen Funeral Home Central Avenue Chapel.
