Hazel Irene Floyd Porter, 89, of Ashland, Ky. Went to be with the Lord December 25, 2011 at the Community Hospice Center
She was born September 27,1922 the daughter of the late David C. Floyd and Sallie Ann Smith Floyd of Greenup County. Hazel is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Elmo B. Porter, five sisters and seven brothers. Also preceding her in death was a caring brother in law Joseph Elliott Porter.
Survivors include her daughter, Deanna Porter Arrington (Gary), granddaughter Gretchen Arrington VanHoose (Bryan), a great granddaughter Breanna Leigh VanHoose, and a sister in law Betty Porter all of Ashland.
Hazel earned her Bachelor of Arts, MA, and Rank I at Morehead State University. She served as a fifth grade teacher and principal at Hatcher Elementary School from 1956 to 1980. Hazel then served as Principal at Condit Elementary from1980 to1981. She was later promoted to the office of Pupil Personal at the Ashland Board of Education Central Office where she retired in 1992 with thirty six years of total service.
Hazel Porter was known around the area and throughout the state for her work in education. She served on numerous committees and many educational organizations. Hazel is a former officer and president of Ashland Education Association, served as president of Eastern Kentucky Education Association, and secretary of Kentucky Education Association. She was also instrumental in the formation of the DARE Program in the public schools.
Hazel lived her life as a faithful follower of Jesus Christ. Many have benefited from her years of teaching Sunday School at Pollard Baptist Church. She served the Lord the past twenty years at Garner Baptist Church where she was a charter member.
Services will be conducted 11:00am Wednesday, December 28, 2011 at the Steen Funeral Home 13th Street Chapel by Reverend Jon Black, Pastor of Calvary Baptist Church, Piketon, Ohio and Reverend Gary Arrington, Pastor of Garner Baptist Church.
Friends may call from 6-8pm Tuesday, December 27, 2011 at the funeral home.
