Raymond Murphy Legg, 89, of Ashland, went home to the Lord, Tuesday, January 31, 2012 at his residence. He was born January 1, 1923, just outside the town of Summersville in Nicholas County, West Virginia, a son of the late Raymond Calvin and Verna Margaret Murphy Legg. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Charles and Lewis Legg, sister, Donna Patterson.
Raymond was a member of the Old Orchard Church of Christ in Ashland, served as a Gideon, was an avid outdoorsman who loved gardening and carpentry work, a devoted family man and family historian who has left a legacy of memories for his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Doris Anderson Legg, sons, Patrick (Janet) Legg of Stuart, FL, Raymond Legg, Jr. of Gloucester, VA, daughters, Elizabeth (Merv) Lewis, Rebecca Wilson all of Ashland, sister, Nell (Arley) Moore, brothers, Tom (Mildred) Legg, Okey (Betty) Legg, Jerry (Naomi) Legg, Bob (June) Legg, eleven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren.
He graduated from Morris Harvey College, Charleston, WV in 1952, and was a Corporal in the Army Air Corps during World War II.
Funeral services for Mr. Legg will be held 11:00 AM, Friday, February 3, 2012, at the Steen Funeral Home, Central Avenue Chapel, by Pastor William Kennedy. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Burial Park. Visitation for family and friends will be from 6-8 PM Thursday at the funeral home.
Military graveside services will be conducted by the American Legion Post #93 Kenova, WV.
